Greener Britain in 2025?
Government announce new emission targets.
With the British governments announcement of making the country greener, by giving new targets to reduce the 1990’s high pollution emissions to fifty percent by 2025. Will it finally start the ball rolling in much bigger countries, like the USA, China and Germany who pollute the atmosphere more each year? Of course, they are not the only ones, but as some of the biggest offenders is it time for them to throw their hats into the ring and follow suit?
China with its rapidly uncontrolled growth in heavy industrial processes would seem to be the obstacle that might derail the push to clean up the atmosphere. Still even without the co-operation of China, if the rest of the world’s big industrial nations can commit to doing the same will we see the ozone layer repair itself? Will this in turn push back the tide of global warming eventually stopping the break up of the arctic ice fields?
These questions even though so important, no doubt will be put on the back burner through lack of admittance that pollution is one of the biggest problems we face. Governments will go merrily on their own way, having their own agendas that revolve around the financial world and their economies.
Forward looking governments might just realise, by grasping this very difficult straw and actually doing something the work generated would improve so many things. Not only the health of so many who because of pollution, struggle to breathe causing an enormous strain on medical facilities. In addition, workers would go back into full time employment, producing hardware, all materials required for wind farms and solar panels – to reduce the need for oil and coal burning for power stations. The production of green products might be more expensive in the beginning, but the actual saving in the end with higher employment would negate this. Japans problems with nuclear power and the melt down in Chernobyl, have already sounded the death knell for this type of energy in many countries.
Is it time that the populations in these countries was presented with all the facts, so they could see the benefits and drawbacks to enable them to voice their opinion? If they do get this opportunity to do so, will the governments actually take any notice of what they want and act quickly? All these questions need to be answered as quickly as possible, otherwise it is calculated the weather systems we are seeing today will become more violent and unpredictable.

I too hope those in power will use their heads instead of wallet for thinking … Though, it seems unlikely.

Big industrial countries should contribute a great deal of effort and financial resources to reduce pollution. The world should gradually wean itself from dependence on fossil fuel because it is a big pollutant. A shift to renewable energy should be in order.

Great article! I can’t understand why we aren’t harnessing more of mother nature’s power.
