Groceries and the Price Goes Up

By Shawn May Scott

Well I went shopping today to my favorite place to buy meat and cheese. To my horror and dismay my bill had gone up to over one hundred dollars. I had been able to shop at this store and buy six weeks of fresh meat and cheese for my family for just under the hundred mark for the last year or so. It was a shock at the calculator to see that the price of milk had jumped sixteen cents and the price of our favorite cheese had remained the same but the amount in the package had decreased considerably. I have not gotten to the size of the meat portions yet. That was nothing shy of a disappointment as they too had shrunk and the price had remained the same.

It has come to my attention, as I am sure to most of you that we are paying a great deal more at the checkout in the grocery department. The cost of fresh produce has finally caught up to the cost of gasoline and as our home grown produce supplies run short for the winter we will be seeing the prices go up even more. So what is a family to do? Well there are a number of things that can help you manage a grocery bill that exceeds you wallet.

First try couponing. For items that you use such as toiletries, laundry and kitchen soaps, and canned or shelf stable goods couponing can be an easy way to save money. You can collect coupons from many different sources including your local newspaper and from the Internet. There are a great deal of sites to choose from that will mail coupons to you to help you reduce the cost of feeding and cleaning your family and household. Check my article on Couponing the Canadian Way for more on this subject. http://gomestic.com/homemaking/couponing-the-canadian-way/

You can also use price match at your local Wal-Mart. Not to promote one store over another but Wal-Mart has the best couponing and price match policy to date. They will match any local grocery stores price on the same product. They will also take coupons after the price match, which helps you even further to save on that ever-rising bill at the checkout. Check out your local stores couponing and price match policy by e-mailing their customer service departments.
