Growing Up with Violence

Discusses the impact that violence has on the lives of children who grow up in that type of environment.

With the onset of so much violence it has caused our children to wonder what the future holds for them. Many see their future as bleak and without purpose. They find themselves questioning what they need to happen to catch a break. Children who are exposed to violence at an early age have a difficult time trying to figure out what their next move is. They don’t understand just how important their education is to getting out of their current situation. Not all children uphold this type of mentality. Some of these children see their environment as a reason to push forward and get out. They become determined not to repeat the cycles that they have encountered most of their life.

So what needs to transpire in order to change the mentality of our children? Cities that are struggling with gang violence need to provide more positive outlets that would allow children to grow beyond their impoverished situations. They need to look at presenting opportunities that would cultivate growth rather violence. We spend so much time creating programs for this and programs for that, that we forget about the ones that need it the most…our youth. In order to solidify our future and make sure that it is a promising one, we need to make ourselves aware of the implications of allowing our impoverished areas go uncheck with violence, gangs, and drugs. We have got to get a handle on this before it’s too late.
