Hate Crime on College Campuses

Hate crimes and what people do in response.

Being different is what makes a person who they are and that is what offenders hate the most. They hate people who are different and usually attack people during open opportunity rather than planning things out. For example, when they attacked Patrick on the campus of DePaul, they didn’t go home and plan to attack him, they were just walking down the street and saw him leave a building where they decided to attack him at that moment. Little things like that are what can help avoid these situations.

Giving the offender opportunity is one of the most common ways of being attacked. Walking with at least one other person will more than likely give the offender a second thought as to whether to attack you or not. These small steps could help but in order to feel safer in public places, people need to reach out to a broader audience because more than likely we are reaching out more to the victims rather than trying to help the suspect. Showing people the seriousness of committing crimes will give them the proper motivation for them to stop.

Looking back at how hate crimes are handled on college campuses and how it is classified, more action needs to be done in order to control this problem. Both school officials and law enforcement need to take extensive action into decreasing violence and the public needs to stop focusing on certain crimes while leaving others in the dark. The system needs to change because the one in place is simply not effective.
