Health Care Reform

by Douglass Rush in Issues, August 25, 2009

Health care reform.

Is there any hotter topic than health care these days?  I don’t think so. We all know health care is a huge problem in this country. Too many people are either uninsured or under insured. I know what it is like to be under insured. Having coverage for some things and not others. Having to pay out of pocket for some services was not a proposition I was prepared for. Imagine not having any coverage at all.

Having adequate access to good health care should be a right of citizenship, not a privilege.  Something has to be done, and I believe that it should be done sooner than later.  What we all need to acknowledge though, is that it will not be easy to do, and the raging debates about how to do it are proof of that. There are many issues that require serious consideration. I do not envy those whose charge it is to get it done.

The debate about health care is so important that there are town hall meetings going on all across the country.  Unfortunately, many of these “meetings” are turning out to be nothing more than excuses to behave immaturely and to create a ruckus, rather than debating any issues.  There is also a lot of misinformation being spread and weeding through what is fact and what is fiction can be frustrating.  Here are some interesting facts that I found on the healthreform.gov website.

* 1/6 of all domestic spending is for health care.
*We spend more on health care than housing or food.
*We spend more on health care right now than any other country.
*For many small businesses, health care is their number one expense.
*Nearly 1/3 of people who are forced into bankruptcy by medical conditions, actually had insurance when they got sick or were injured.

You can find more good information at http://www.healthreform.gov .

Like everyone else, I have concerns about health care reform. For example:

*Will we be able to keep the coverage we have?  If I am happy with my current coverage, could I still be forced to change it?
*Will we be able to get the care we need in a timely fashion? If I am in need of immediate care, I don’t want to have to worry about how long it will take to receive it.
*The move to digitize medical records.  How secure will our medical information be? Who will have access to it?  And how will “Big Brother” fit in to the mix?

These are just a few of things that I think about when it comes to the reform issues.
I would love to know what you think!  Please leave a comment addressing a concern that you have about health care reform.
