Healthier Popcorn

Corn crops are mostly genetically modified. Understand why this is unhealthy and what to do to avoid this.

What About GMOs?

Many crops are genetically modified organisms (GMOs) or genetically engineered (GE). Corn has been modified genetically since 1995 as is grown using genetically modified seeds in about 29 different countries. There are many studies that show a relationship between genetically modified foods in the diet and the development of disorders. When foods are modified, DNA from insects, viruses, animals or even from other humans is placed inside the DNA of the crop or food. This alteration is meant to improve some aspect of the crop like disease resistance, for example. What this does to people when we eat it is yet to be determined in the long-term.

What Kind of Foods Contain Corn Products?

Corn is present in many different forms from high fructose corn syrup to corn meal to corn flour. One or more of these derivatives of corn is present in most packaged foods. Some foods are syrup, cereal, snack foods, chips, ice cream, peanut butter and sweet foods. Eating organic foods helps us avoid ingesting genetically altered foods since the USDA Organic label requires that the product be free of GMOs.
