High, Drunk, or Cancer?
Why should we legalize marijuana? Most people can’t name five bad things about it. In this article I list the pros and cons of marijuana, tobacco, and alcohol use and why, if you have to choose, marijuana is the best option.
First, I’ll start off comparing the benefits of marijuana, alcohol, and tobacco. Marijuana is an excellent stress reliever that relaxes your muscles and makes your mind into a world of creativity. Being high is simply a mix of being tired with a lot of energy drinks. Your mind dulls, your body loosens, but your heart rate increases and you still have plenty of energy and craziness to do fun and crazy things until you come down off your high and then you feel tired. Alcohol makes you disoriented, dulls your mind, reduces coordination, slurs your speech, impairs your memory, lowers your reaction time, and basically makes you clumsy, stupid, and angry until you pass out. Not to mention the nasty headache you have when you wake up the next morning from dehydration. Tobacco increases your heart rate and blood pressure which gives you a buzz but can cause serious health problems in the future.
Marijuana on the other hand has little to no health problems. Marijuana does in fact have more carcinogens (cancer causing chemicals) than tobacco but education would come with legalization. Unlike tobacco, marijuana carcinogens and other dangerous chemicals in it can be filtered out by using a bowl, bong, or vaporizer. It is also used in several cases of medication for cancer patients and other problems. It also can cause addiction but only if smoked very, very frequently. On the other hand, everyone has seen the numbers about tobacco. The main issue with tobacco is its affect on your lungs. It can cause cancer and other lung related diseases and problems. After twenty years of smoking, both your lungs with basically be black. It also causing increased blood pressure and heart rate which can lead to heart problems and the increased risk of blood clots as one gets older. Tobacco users lose an average of 5-20 minutes off their lives for every cigarette they smoke and that isn’t even including people who develop diseases. It also cause yellow teeth, reduced bone density, wrinkles, and many more problems. Alcohol use is most commonly connected with liver failure. Your liver cleans out the bad chemicals and waste in your body that can cause harm. Alcohol is loaded with dangerous chemicals and it overloads your liver causing it to no longer function. It can also lead to serious problems such as car accidents, brain trauma, overdosing, alcohol poisoning, passing out, and poor decision making.
In the end, I just don’t understand why our government has not legalized marijuana when our grocery stores and gas stations are filled with fatal chemicals. Education is not only the key to stopping alcohol and tobacco addiction and health issues, it is the key to opening up people to the possibility of marijuana that can still give them a buzz or a fun time at a party.
