Homeless Five

The fifth article about Daytona’s Homeless.

To start off my current observation of our guy is that he does a balancing act each and every day of his life. Due to the coming of fall and the upcoming temperature drop, our guy has added more to the bike. His usual is many small bags, all neatly tied every where possible on the bike. He has added what appears to be a large blanket on the front of the bike. It is all neatly tied in place and protrudes from the front of the bike. No matter where I happen to spot him, he has a fully loaded bike. He has to balance all this stuff every day. He seems to ride all day long. He appears to be healthy, probably from all the exercise. The Florida weather can be very brutal on the body, especially without the proper shelter. It is dry during the day because of the sun but at night the humidity is very thick. I go out for the paper in the morning and the house and the grass is absolutely soaked just liked it rained. This is everyday and it is why we get a lot of mildew in Florida. I can’t imagine sleeping outside with all that moisture getting into your bones. Perhaps sleeping on the beach may be better, softer, less bugs, just as long as your clear of the incoming tide, which brings in the jellyfish that scatter the sand. Unfortunately you don’t see the homeless on the beach. They have a beach patrol at night that go up and down the beaches and make sure they are clear of anyone loitering. I knew someone who did this job and was told they run into a lot of situations and it can be dangerous. I used to work for a retail chain in Daytona and the trucks would come in early after dark and have to wait till morning for us to unload the truck. It was against the companies policy to open the back door after dark. The truck drivers used to tell us stories when they parked in the back of the building next to the dumpster. The homeless used to gather back there and raid the dumpster at night and gather around it to sleep there. The trucks stopped parking in the back because they would be awakened in the night by someone knocking on their windows. They started parking in the front of the building, which was patrolled by the police more often. There was a new study about homeless students in Florida and it is said there are 41,286 known homeless students. This includes students of families living out of their cars, living in motels, living in shelters, and living with friends. This was a study done only in Florida, what about the rest of the states. This only included students, not all those individual souls out there. The numbers are staggering, since every state has this problem. The support for the cause of homelessness is an important one. It hits many people from many walks of life.
