Homelessness in The World

by DeSmet Spartan in Issues, September 11, 2009

This is an essay about Homelessnes that I wrote in 5th grade.

Homelessness is the term used to describe the part of a population that has no place to live. Homelessness is a very sad and unfortunate occurrence. When people are homeless, it means that a person has no shelter to live in. Here in the U.S. there are an estimated 850,000 homeless people, and a world estimate of 100 million people. Most of the United States homeless are found in cities. The homeless in the cities are the people that carry around carts and sleep in boxes in the alleys between buildings. They are commonly referred to as hobos or vagabonds. These types of people are found in cities all across the world.  These people are the face of homelessness in the U.S. But, there is another less well known type of homelessness. Some people have family or friends that support them and provide them shelter. The majority of homeless are found in third world countries like India, Brazil, China, Central America, and most African countries. They usually live in dirty streets bathed with filth and disease, dying from malnutrition. There are many organizations that help homeless people try to recover. The organizations can be as simple as a coat drive at a local school to a national fund-raiser broadcasted on TV. It does not matter about the size of a fund-raiser, it does matter that you helped one person because one is a whole lot better than none.

The scanty safty net we left in place for some is the same one left in place for us and on that day we discover poetic justice, it will be too late to complain.
