How to Do Random Kind of Kindness

These are just some examples, should be more, if I can think, may come back with part two or more.

Like Mother Teresa’s saying “We can’t do great things, but we can do small things with great love”. There are many things which we would like to do to help others, but circumstances don’t allow us to do, in terms of time, money and energy. However we can still do things which can help others everyday, if we want, need not be monetary help.

When seeing a banana skin on the floor, help to clear it away so that another person will not slip and  fall.  (well, need not be banana skin, could be something else, could be tissue paper, dollar notes, sweet wrapper etc)

Hold the door for someone when someone is just right behind you when you are opening it (unless the one behind is someone you want to avoid or your rival, just kidding).

Seeing someone drops something on the floor without knowing, immediately tell him (may be a important phone number, lottery ticket with good potential to win, money, etc).

When taking public transport, someone needs the seat more than you do, give up the seat to him/her (maybe you also don’t get the seat, so nothing for you to offer).  Actually for this don’t need me to mention, everyone knows but may forget.  However it’a alright not to give up your seats if you are not feeling well, or inconvenient, don’t feel bad if you can’t.

Although you have brushed your teeth, early in the morning, but say you are in the public transport, and you feel like yawning, please cover your mouth, people need fresh air to breathe.

At the supermarket, the new recruited cashier may be slow, give him/her some encouragement by not giving a angry look even if you are getting impatient, offer a smile (the cashier may not be a new recruit, maybe he/she is just slow, let him/her count the money carefully).  However, if he is really too slow and you can’t wait, either you give up buying or change to another cashier, but try not to complain unless he/she is really rude.  Give man a chance.

Tips & Warnings

  • There are more we can do, whenever need arises and provided we can afford to do them.
  • Follow our heart, usually not wrong.
  • Be helpful, but don’t be nosey, don’t get overboard.  To you, you may be helpful, but to others, they may think otherwise as you know, not everyone appreciates or reciprocates.  Sometimes by not helping, you are helping people as at times, people just want people to leave them alone.

Good tips Star! I was once again laughing at that part where you should not yawn for others to have fresh air! LOL! You can’t help being funny even if your topic is serious. Love it!

Really polite and excellent pointers StarP. I think everyone should aim for at least one act of kindness per day if they never ever done it before. It may not even be to an outsider but can be to a family member first and slowly increase it day by day. Brilliant post.

You always manage to impart such wisdom. One of the schools I teach in openly encourages and rewards random acts of kindness.

An enlightening piece written by so kind a person as you, mate. I don’t suppose the mere act of writing it must have occurred purely by chance as well? :P

I totally agree with all your points.. Regarding the last one, in the supermarket, I would generalize it to \’customer service\’ as a general industry – sometimes people, who never worked in this industry themselves, can get extremely impatient in situations when all you need is give another moment to the clerk, cashier or whoever is serving you.
    Very well written, enjoyed reading!

Nice advice. I will surely help clean away any dollar notes I see. Few days ago, I cleaned 1euro cent coin away from parking lot. I feel great that I probably saved some unsuspecting motorist … :)

”Practice a random act of kindness every day” – is one of my most favourite quotes Star. You described it simply and beautifully. :-)

Good suggestions Star P, and for the gentlemen, as a bonus, this is a nice way to get the attention of a lady they may be interested in.
