How to Improve the Welfare Program

Welfare is a social issue that isn’t covered enough in politics today. It needs some changes for the better. I cover why we need changes, and how we could go about changing it.

Welfare is a social issue I believe isn’t covered enough in politics. The welfare program has many flaws in it that need to be fixed. The whole point of the program is to help people temporarily, who are in need. It’s supposed to help you get back on your feet and that’s it. I don’t think anyone can honestly disagree with me on that.

Welfare has become a life support system. People feel that they are entitled to it, instead of privileged to the program. The signs are as plain as day to me that the welfare program is flawed. Many people in the program are no longer motivated to better themselves, and better their lives. They have lost the concepts of driving toward the American Dream, earning your own keep, and self worth in many cases, and the list goes on. Please don’t get me wrong; I’m not opposed to helping anyone in need. I’m just trying display points about how and why we need to change how the program works.

Now to continue… I personally don’t think it’s fair not only to the taxpayer, but to the people on welfare as well, about how the program is taking away their lives. The welfare program almost forces them to stay in it. Someone on welfare can make more money than someone working forty hours a week at a minimum wage job. That’s not a good thing. That’s the program saying it’s better to not work at all, because they can have more money doing nothing. Another point that it’s a failed program is the fact that many families are in their fourth generation on welfare. I believe that, that is the biggest sign of all.

All right I guess it wouldn’t be fair of me to complain without have a suggestion for changing the program for the better. The suggestion I have is to have anybody on welfare earn what he or she is getting on welfare. Basically have the government, whether it be local or federal, create jobs for them. Even if its cleaning the streets, cutting grass, or putting together mailings. You know something to help better the community. There is always something they can do. Now I know some of you are going to bring up the people who are legally handicapped, who can’t do anything for themselves, let alone work. For that there is a simple answer. Create a program specifically for them. It’s understandable that they wouldn’t be able to do much to help out, and that’s fine. Other than them, anyone else can do something, has them earn our tax dollars. At least that’s the way I see it. Personally I believe it helps bring back the ideas of helping someone help himself or herself. It’s like the age-old quote, “Give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. But if you teach a man to fish, you feed him for a life time.”
