How to Prevent Human Trafficking
Outlines strategies to assist in the prevention of human trafficking.
Human trafficking is not something that a single person can do anything about on their own. It takes a united effort to make serious inroads regarding this activity. There are some positive actions that you can take to assist in the prevention of human trafficking.
There are two main areas that can be utilized to prevent vulnerable groups falling into the hands of those trafficking humans. The first series of preventative actions are government focused; looking at ways countries can legislate to prevent this activity occurring. The second is a series of actions directed to individuals, trying to make them more aware of the potential for deception and highlight legal alternatives.
Governments play a key role in ensuring that vulnerable groups are protected from predators, especially those involved in human trafficking. Through various national and international motions, governments have the capacity to influence public opinion and activity on the ground.
Penalties are created for individuals and organizations found guilty of trafficking humans. This is the main reason that this type of trafficking is found underground. These types of preventative measures are only of significant value when the legal system applies appropriate penalties in relation to the crime.
More recently, penalties have also been applied to customers of these traders. This has been done to make receiving of illegally trafficked people less appealing to those that would consider them as an investment.
One of the other avenues that governments can take is the collaborative approach across international borders. As trafficking humans relies on their being a destination country with operators willing to accept these people, cross border networks are required to assist with obtaining intelligence on illegal activities, apprehension and ultimately prosecution of offenders.
The main problem with governmental interventions is that it relies on the government being in a stable state to implement the measures described above. Where the government is in turmoil, in civil war or other destabilizing states, illegal traders in humans will flourish, as the resources need to fight the trade are unavailable. It could even be the turmoil that the people are attempting to escape from.
On a more local level there are activities that can be undertaken that empower individuals and families to make more informed decisions about their future. Educating people on the dangers of following secretive or dangerous plans to escape is the first step in breaking the human trafficking cycle. Likewise, giving people information on ways to improve their circumstance in an open and transparent way helps to reduce the number of susceptible people. Children and women need to be aware of the situations that may face them if they put their trust in the wrong hands.
Education, action by those in authority and intervention by organizations willing to put themselves in the front line are the keys to reducing the levels of human trafficking throughout the world. When governments refuse to take the appropriate steps to protect their citizens, individuals need to band together to make their voices heard and force those in power to listen and act accordingly.
