How to Tell If You are Overpaying for Your Data Plan

When it comes to data plans, many of us are confused on how much we use, so it is easy to overpay for a plan that you do not need. Learn how to determine if your current data plan is the right one for you.

If you have a cell phone, you have probably wondered at one time or another whether you are paying too much for your data plan.  There are ways that you can monitor your cell phone usage to determine whether you are paying too much or if you really need as large of a data plan as they say you do.  The best thing to do is to keep an eye on how much data you use for about three months or look at your last three cell phone bill statements.  You will want to divide that total by three to determine what the average rate of usage is, and that is likely how much data you use almost every month.

After that, you will want to take a look at all the data plans that are available through your cell phone carrier.  Compare what your average usage per month is to all of the data plans and choose the one that includes all of the usage that you will need, but not more than that.  If you are on the borderline of two different data plans, choose the larger plan to avoid overage charges that you may incur if you use your cell phone a little more one month than usual.  You should choose the plan that works the best for you, and provides you what you need but not more than that.  Although it may seem like it is worth the extra ten dollars in a larger plan than you need, if you saved that money up for a year, you could probably pay for a week’s worth of groceries or splurge on something you have wanted to buy.

If your cell phone contract is about to expire or has already expired, you should look around at other cell phone carriers to see who offers the most for the lowest price.  If you can find a better deal elsewhere, it may be time to switch your cell phone carrier.  If your cell phone carrier offers the best deal, you should renew your contract with them to lock in the rate that you pay for your current data plan and some cell phone carriers offer deals on your monthly bill or free cell phones if you sign a contract.  Before switching, be sure that there is a way out if you are not satisfied with your cell phone service.  Some carriers offer a thirty day trial to see if you like it before you commit to the one or two years of the contract.

Many cell phone carriers have given the impression that most people use a higher amount of data than they actually do.  More than sixty percent of customers use far less data than the other forty percent.  There is a small percentage of cell phone customers that use a much higher amount of data than all of the other users, which drives up the average for everyone, giving the impression that we all use more data than we actually do.  If you are paying for the unlimited data plan and you find that you use far less than the cheapest data plan offered by your cell phone carrier, you are paying too much for your data plan.
