Human Rights in The Midst of Crime
I live in a city where a sector of the society specifically the business and the work sectors are continuously harnessing the benefits of unperturbed operations towards economic development, unmindful of the silent cry of those who were considered impediments of progress, victims of serial judicial killings.
Judicial killings has long been a recurrent issue but despite the government efforts to look into deper investigations, nothing seemed resolved. It is surprising that the general population considers operation of death squads and the series of killings, the better option to achieve peace and economic upliftment.
Drug perpetrators has no place, nor thieves and snatchers could thrive in our city. Every single day, in most cases, young boys in their teens are killed by motorcycle riding men in broad daylight. Witnesses say, the boys were sniffers and snatchers. I do not understand the concept of why death should be the outright solution. Do they not have the right of a chance to be heard?..Does the killing justify the crime committed?
If you try to look at the other side of the coin, it seems like one could understand that progress and survival is one aspect to consider, so that people could only consent to such activities of murder. Before the present leadership, the city has been infiltrated with tremendous crimes such as drug trafficking, syndicated robberies, and some other unstoppable heinous activities. Undesirable elements thrive around, in every corner of the city. One cannot just walk along the streets with a piece of jewelry or else she gets her wrist broken or ears torn. Fear has stricken the minds of the constituents…Crimes are all over……
When the present leadership has taken the seat, all of those perpetrators are slowly getting themselves invisible. But the people cannot deny the recurring death from day to day. Most victims or alleged suspects come from very poor families. Relatives of the victims can only complain to themselves…..not one has been heard. They cannot believe of the victims to have committed the crimes, further saying the death squad got the wrong man….
My question is, what if the hit men got the wrong guys?……And if so that they did get the right guy, is it justifiable to have killed them?
The Commission on Human Rights has always stood by its rules: No one is above the law, and that whoever does commit a crime should be punished whoever he may be….
I hope justice will prevail in the name of democracy, whatever case it may be.
