If a Subject Upsets You Stay Away From It!

Do you have an obsession about a controversial or upsetting subject of which you are powerless to affect a change in the world? Does this obsession hurt you and those around you needlessly or even make the problems worse in society in regards to the subject of your obsession?

There are a lot of controversial and upsetting subjects in the world that can cause strife to those who choose to focus on them. Strife caused by not being in a position to meaningfully actually help the situation because they do not have the professional credentials to affect a positive change in the world in regards to these subjects. This strife at times extends beyond the individual and impacts the life of their family and friends causing them much undue pain. The pain is undue to the loved ones of the individual, who spends their time focusing on and obsessing over this subject or that, because they in most cases can not affect a change in the world to remedy these certain situations either thus they can not help the person rid themselves of their addiction to their obsession. This is especially ludicrous when the person with the obsession thinks they are making the world a better place by obsessing over this subject or that, when in fact are only bringing more strife into the world.

What are these controversial and upsetting subjects? These subjects are anything that an individual who is powerless to help because they do not have the credentials to do so in a manner that is safe for all concerned obsesses over to a point where their life and the lives of those around them are affected negatively. This negativity makes any contribution to a remedy of the situation these folks offer ineffectual and at times direly dangerous.

At times this obsession can take on a dangerous tone when people try to help out in various venues with advice about certain subjects that are best left to professionals. When this advice is dealing with a severe illnesses or life situations it is careless to offer advice unless you are a professional. When the matters are of a criminal nature leave it up to those professionals in law enforcement and the criminal justice system. If your obsession is about things that you can not change at all accept it and stop obsessing over it.

I stopped watching the news constantly over a year ago and I feel much better for it. Prior to that I had CNN on for background noise and would from time to time watch my pet areas of interest in the news, my obsessions. I stopped doing that because it was emotionally unhealthy for me. Things upset me. Things I could do nothing about. I did not want to live me life upset. The solution was to not view things that would upset, especially when I could not change them.

It is better to focus on the areas of life that you can affect a positive change in and stay away from those things that upset you and cause strife for you and your loved ones. I know what things upset or disturbed me that I could not change and I now stay away from them when I can. Because of this I can shift my focus towards the things that, although they may upset me, I can change and attempt to make life better for my family, while at the same time offer help in my areas of interest that I can responsibly offer a hand in making the world a better place.

I completly agree with you Mark, 100%. I am doing the same like you. anything that disturbs the peace of mind or you feel it is not right, we just have to look elsewhere. Our healths improve and our lifestyle. recently, i stopped watching t.v. as much as before and started reading. my eyesight has improved and my shock and interest in reading too. thanks very much for this lovely post. Beautiful work. :)

I have the same problem with the news, I watch it all day. It upsets and angers me, but it also drives my determination to bring awareness to those that would rather live in the blissful ignorance and hopefully make a difference somewhere somehow. It is obsessive, but I can’t stay away.

i agree with you. For my case, whenever I read and see articles about the sufferings of children, I will feel very upset. Sometimes friends emailed me those articles, saying they are good for us to know, I politely requested them to stop sending to me as I will feel upset. I am okay if they send me those horror ones. Some people said I’m not being realistic, but I just want to avoid being upset whenever possible.

I gave up newspapers and news years ago. I get so depressed with it all. Interesting article.

Mark, I could not agree more, I seldom watch the news because I know I can’t do a thing about all the problems I see in the world. I do what I can from where I am which is precious little. and try not to worry about what I can’t fix.
