A speech on how the media has a great impact on our lives.
I am here to tell you all about a serious and very dangerous issue; one that may become our very demise, the media. The media is everywhere and influences everything. Day after day the world’s technology advances. And day after day the media gets a hold of these technologies. Television, movies, radio broadcasts, music, and more are all tools in the dirty world of the media. For years the media has influenced the lives of people from around the globe and still continues at a strong pace to this very second. This causes many major and minor changes within people’s attitudes, personalities, and actions resulting in people going against their better judgment. If that’s not enough; Oprah, a woman we all have looked up to at one time or another once said, “The media impacts how children think about sex, violence, and race. It affects their health and shapes their reality.
It can set their expectations. It can define their values and behavior.” We have so much going on in this world, from events that cannot necessarily be controlled like war and natural disasters. Then we have gangs and school shootings which are events that we can and should control. Now we have the media, another event we can control, becoming more powerful and creating monsters by the hour, even minute.
At an early age children are being bombarded by various messages and images from the media- messages about how to behave, what choices to make, and even what and how to think. Because they are so young and have yet to develop good judgment, kids try to emulate what they learn from the TV, video games, movies, and certain sites on the Internet. Children believe that they are impervious to harm or damage and this is what causes the media to grow. It feeds off the minds of young children resulting into parents getting their kids taken away because their child’s poor behavior looks like poor parenting. It is overwhelming and sickening!
The thing that gets to most people, including myself the most is when sexual behavior is considered uncontrollable. While researching this topic into a little more depth through various sources, I discovered a quote from an anonymous teen about her friend’s sexual behaviors. “My friends often get ideas like video taping friends having one-night stands or just having sex with all of their friends, and it’s not okay. I think TV and other forms of the media portray it like it is okay.” Many people think that just because you see people having sexual contact with someone on some kind of screen or hear it through a speaker they feel that the “cool” thing to do is copycat what they see and hear. I remember watching an episode of “Law and Order” with my mom where a man beat, raped, and killed a seven year old girl according to what he called directions on an kiddy-porn website on the Internet. Sickening and fake I know, but the point behind the story is just how influenced anyone can be by the media.
