Internet Rape and Craigslist

Craigslist has been accused of promoting prostitution and Internet crime and rape is on the rise. False idenities are easy to set up in cyberspace and it’s anybody’s guess who is out there. A good example is the woman from Wyoming who was assaulted at her front door. Her attacker claimed he was only fulfilling her fantasy she had shared with him on the Internet.

Is the Internet getting too far out of hand? A woman who was accosted on her front steps and raped in her living room believes it is. This woman in the Wyoming city of Casper was returning home when a man grabbed her. He proceeded to to drag her into the living room, hog tie, and rape her at knife point, leaving her bound on the living room floor.

A few days before the rape she had complained to the police that someone had made a false Craigslist posting about her, which had personal information and photographs included. The ad read, ” need a real aggressive man with no concern for women” When she complained, the ad was taken off Craigslist, but not before it was seen by scores of people.

When questioned by Natrona County’s Deputy Sheriff Todd Sexton, Ty Oliver McDowell admitted going to the victim’s home, he thought at her invitation, and having sexual contact with her to “fulfill her sexual fantasy” He told officials he had corresponded with a person he thought was the woman by email. But when investigated it was found the victims ex boy friend Jebidiah James Stripe, was the person who had set the woman up without her knowledge.

Stripe was communicating from the email address pretending to be the woman. So, the ex boy friend,  a Marine based in Twentynine Palms Calif, was also charged with conspiracy to commit first-degree sexual assault. Stripe is accused of posing as the woman on line and claiming to have a fantasy about being raped.

Prosecutor Mike Blonigen, the Natrona County district attorney, said Internet cases pose a big problem to law enforcement.”Tracking down who is involved is difficult” Blonigen said. “its easy to set up a false identity in cyberspace, and they have to commit some overt action to come to our attention. It’s a big issue.”

This is only one of several sex crimes in which the Internet linked the perpetrator and the victim. Craigslist has been accused of promoting prostitution and in 2008 the company agreed to tighten it’s adult services ads. Craigslist started requiring working numbers and credit card payment for such ads. But concerns have again been raised after prosecutors linked a sex related killing in Boston to Craigslist. Blonigen said he would prefer Craigslist not to run such ads, but added, “You know somebody’s going to do it even if they don’t.”

I honestly believe the ex boyfriend should be charged with the most. He set the whole thing up and pretended to be the woman. As sick and as stupid as the rapist was he may well have believed he was having consenual sex with someone who had a kinking fantasy.

What really made me think hard was the fact that the ex boyfriend set the entire thing up so even if the woman said no the rapist would think she was playing a game. The ex wanted to make sure this woman was hurt and hurt badly.

People becomes dissatisfied then they proceed wrong things. The humanity levels are decreasing day by day and we are turning into animals. Or worse than the animals.
    Very strange but true.

No matter what the technology you will always have crimminals. Before it was the telephone. Now it’s the Internet. Tomorrow it will be something else.

I don’t think the internet has gone too far. I think her boyfriend had gone too far. Even without internet, her boyfriend would’ve thought of other plans to hurt her.

Craigslist has not gone too far, I am sure they took it down as soon as they were made aware. The problem is the people. Both guys are to blame.

I think this guy would have done that regardless… the Internet is, at bottom, a communication tool. You can’t control how people will communicate on it because you can’t control how people communicate.

And communication, in general, has never been 100% “safe”. People say hurtful things and do hurtful things all the time. But it only makes the news if the Internet is involved.

    Regards,

    Inna

Internet and everything on it are purely inert tools that can be used for good or bad. The main thing we need to remember is that we can not control everyone. We need to teach our children how to view themselves so they are not fodder for the nasties…….. as children or when they become adults. Also so they will not become one of the nasties… With all these new technologies emerging keeping our family and ourselves safe is gonna be a bumpy ride. I feel that texting and email are destroying communication….. there comes a time when you need to hear an actual voice, write an actual letter. That all might seem off topic but if you really think about it in regards to this article is is kinda linked.

I wrote something, not as terrifying as this, tho. I went on one of those dating sites to actually find a stalker. And then to figure out how to get rid of him…all for the purposes of an article.

Don’t try this at home, unless you live in Jamaica, in a ‘local’ area.

There is a big drive in the UK at the minute to keep children safe online, and given my daughter is starting to use it to play games on cbeebies, I’m obviously concerned that it won’t be much longer before she progresses to other sites. The internet is a playground for the depraved, and the more done to catch/deter those who would use it to prowl for victims, the better.

In late 2005 my ex-boyfriend had posted an article on Craigslist saying that I would do all kinds of nasty things. My mom woke me up about two hours before I had to go to work (I worked Graveyard) because men kept calling. It sucked. I was just really lucky that I had moved in with my mom and so he only knew the phone number and not the address.
