Intolerance is The Child of Ignorance

Why does violence and intolerance exist in our conemporary society? This is a philosophical question, and the best answer is that we should encounter the beast of intolerance within ourself.

The prophets and wise sages tell us the great value of tolerance. Extremism is a wrong attitude toward life, and it breaks our integrity.

Nowadays it is very depressing to know that many people clash in the name of creed, caste and language. The poets and philosophers sigh to the full as these prejudices and wrong attitudes result in violence and bloodshed. This is nothing but bigotry and extremism. This extremism is horrible. It is indecent. We should have tolerance in our attitude to create a safe and happy society. Khalil Gibran very wisely remarks: “I have learned silence from the talkative, toleration from the intolerant, and kindness from the unkind; yet, strange, I am ungrateful to those teachers.”

Would these misguided and astrayed people ever change their attitude?  Violence perpetrated by them results in heavy weight of sorrow for all peace-loving persons. It might well be said that toleration is a divine quality.

There is always a tussel between  the wolf  and lamb, vice and virtue, bigotry and tolerance. Our doubts and falsehoods disappear by adopting a tolerant and nonviolent attitude toward our life’s problems and crisis.

Why does violence and intolerance exist in the world? This is a philosophical question, and the best answer is that  we should encounter the beast of intolerance within ourself. This is possible if we hear the inner voice. This inner voice is accessible to us if we are willing to hear it. Mark Twain very aptly remarks:” I have no color prejudices nor caste prejudices nor creed prejudices.  All I care to know is that a man is a human being, and that is enough for me; he can’t be any worse.”

Violence and ignorance will continue unless people are willing to change and this seems unlikely. People are putting down their bibles and following men who have no knowledge of how to care for people.

They exist simply because they are part of the human nature, unfortunately. As long as we exist, they will, too. It is up to every individual to make up their mind how they want to live their life and whether they will tolerate violence and ignorance.

My grand used to say that there’re many bad people in the world, but he also added that we are fortunate, because there’re others who are very good. I keep apart from those who can’t empatize or show generosity of any kind. Thanks for sharing.
