Iq and Governance in The Philippines

Some thoughts on academic achievement and governance in the Philippines. Or does high IQ guarantee good governance in the Philippines?

In the present crop of Presidentiables, Gilbert Teodoro presents himself as the best qualified in terms of academic achievement:  not unlike his principal endorser and immediate boss, Teodoro graduated from the Jesuit-run Xavier School, earned his college degree at De La Salle University, studied Law at the University of the Philippines and finished his graduate studies in Law at Harvard University. Pretty impressive, isn’t it?  But then, does his educational qualification and intelligence guarantee that once he becomes the next Philippine President, he will rule with integrity, honesty and justice?  Will he be able to spearhead the reversal of our corrupt and corrupted system/society?  Will he not be loyal to his patron and protect her from any charges of plunder let alone give up his post and allow her to become the Prime Minister once Charter Change happens?  These are questions that never cease to hound the man with a brilliant mind, and a pretty wife to boot. How about the other candidates? How do they measure up to this sieve” called IQ-successful governance” correlation of sorts?

Well, then, does IQ really matter in governance? Is it the be-all and end-all of successful leadership in government?  We all know the answer, don’t we? It is not, as history has proven time and time again.  There’s a lot more to leadership than just brains.  So many things to consider, so many factors to look into as Filipinos brace themselves for the coming elections, ready to be swamped with campaign jingles and posters and TV advertisements.

Who should we vote for?  The most intelligent candidate or the average one?  Choose, and choose well.  The country’s future depends on one’s vote or the rumored failure of elections, thanks to the new computerized system of voting. So help us, God.
