Is Gay The New Black?

Is the problem with Gay rights actual equivalent to those that haunt African-Americans?

Many activists and observers of the Gay rights movement associate it with the Black civil rights movement of the late fifties and sixties.   I interviewed 3 california citizens that see the situation from an entirely different stand point. Brian J. of Modesto said: “as a man of mixed heritage, i dont think that anyone has the right to even say that gays are being denied their full freedom because they are gay. i mean gay men and women never had a restroom or water fountain designated for the sole purpose of segregation. Nor are there gay men that are hung from a rope by police just because they were in ‘a non-gay’ neighborhood, so to say…”   Alicia G. of Pomona says: “I’ve been a homosexual woman since i had an understanding of sexuality- which was around 14 years old. But, I’ve been a black female since before i was born. And, not to say there isnt any discrimination of the gay rights movement, but(laughs) c’mon now! I have to say its alot harder being black, or even hispanic for that matter, than it is to be gay.”  Lauren M. of Shasta county California: “I’m originally from the southeastern United States, where racism against the blacks is still very noticable. And since i’ve been in California I haven’t seen that type of racism or active form of discrimination, against any group, since i’ve left the south…” I would like to say, as a writer and observer of the society- and not as a participant of any public opinion, that the gay and black minorities have suffered through the years. I think its safe to say that they will be compinsated for their toils, when all is said and done. The world is different, this country is different, the that of past times. And all do gain glory, with persistent pursuit of it.
