Italian Immigration- good or bad?

In the last 30 years, many immigrants from all around the world came to live in America. Immigrants came from Mexico, Europe, and even as far as china. Many of the Immigrants came thinking that after working in America for some time, that they would become rich and could go back to live in their homeland. However, this was not the case. The immigrants did not get rich like they imagined they would. Instead, their time in America was full of hard work. One of the largest populations of immigrants that came to the U.S were the Italian immigrants

Over two million Italian immigrants came to America. Most Italian immigrants that came to the U.S were very poor, and were hoping to escape poverty in Italy by coming over to the United States. The Italian immigrants that were poor came in very crowded rooms on the boats. The ride to America was very uncomfortable for many Italian immigrants. When the Italians came to America, most of them worked as laborers. The Italians worked hard days, whether it was construction or some other kind of hard labor. Most Italian kids and teens didn’t get an education because they worked to make more money for the family.

Another reason was Italian immigrants were very family orientated, and they thought that sending their kids to school would distant them from the family. The Italians were Roman Catholic, and that made many Americans uncomfortable. Some of the Immigrants formed gangs, and resorted to crime, and many Americans started to see all Italians as criminals. The Italians usually lived in one area called “little Italy”, and rejected many American cultures. By 1910, half of all the Italian Immigrants left the U.S and went back to Italy.

People have different kinds of opinions about the Italian Immigrants. Some people think that they were good people, while others, didn’t like them too much. I personally believe that the Italian immigrants were a good addition to America. Since there were a large amount of Immigrants, lots of work was done in the U.S. The Italians also brought some of their culture to the U.S, such as new foods, clothes, and many other things.

Over all, I believe that Italian immigrants were a great addition to the united states. A lot of Americans looked down on Italians because they were poor or uneducated, and that some of them chose to commit violence and crime. This does not go for all of the Immigrants, as many of them were hard working, law abiding people. The Italian immigrants did many great things for the U.S, and no matter what people say about them, they mainly good, hard working people.

I’m a little confused here.First you said the last 30 years and then you said since 1910.I apologize before hand if I sound harsh,But you did say some good overall points. But this a deeply personal issue with me because my grandfather, great uncle and great grandmother took this journey you speak of.It wasn’t just poverty but political unrest and the Mafia in southern Italy and Sicily, that was driving them away. Many came here for a chance at a better life yes,and many came during or to enlist during WWI.Thet were treated terribly in NYC,often denied work, treated as criminals, and forced to deny their proud Ethnicity due to racist misinformed idiots. They often never spoke their native language to escape this.Yes,some went back, but many prospered.Twelve cousins and brothers came here over a period of 20 yrs. and single handedly created the wine industry in the Napa Valley in California.More people of Italian descent are born in America and other countries and American sovergn land today than there in the Country of Italy. So,yes,I would say they propelled and prospered.I did, however enjoy your piece here.Italian Americans are forgetting where we come from any more.
