Jamaicans and Unwanted Pregnancy

Scenario

Crystal is 20 years old, she has a job and she is going to school! Crystal meets a 33 year old man by the name of Andrew on the internet via an online dating site. Andrew is charming, intelligent and respectable.

Andrew lives over 200 kilometers away and Crystal decides to meet Andrew and sleep over with him.

Crystal has sex with Andrew and discovers that she is pregnant when she misses her period three weeks later.

Crystal wants to call Andrew and tell him of the pregnancy but she is afraid of what he may respond as they had not spoken in over two weeks. She decides to text the information to him but he does not respond. She asks her sister to call him and he curses her sister and curses her entire family and hangs the phone up! Crystal grudgingly accepts that she is on her own and that this man wants nothing to do with her or her unborn child.

What will she do now that she is pregnant for a man that she barely knows?

She does not even know where he lives or where he works.

How could she have been so stupid?

Then there are her work colleagues, friends and members of the community. What are they going to say and how will they react when they discover her situation?

Her father is a prominent business man in the district, how will he feel?

What will his friends say when they discover that his prized daughter got herself into this thoughtless and asinine situation? What about the rest of her family? What will they think?

Then there is the man that loves her with all his heart and has been waiting for a chance with her for months. How could she tell him that while she had made him wait for almost a year, she had had sex with a man she knew in less than a week? How could she tell him that she was pregnant by this man?

Crystal breaks down and falls into a depression that lasts for months. Her family is enraged, her brothers want blood and her friends are laughing at her. How could she have been so stupid?

Unwanted Pregnancies

Approximately half of all pregnancies that occur in Jamaica are unwanted or untimed pregnancies. Unwanted Pregnancy is a phenomena that is endemic to the Jamaican society especially individuals that are of lower socio economic class compared to their wealthy counterparts. Women often times discover that they are pregnant and that the pregnancy is unanticipated and unwanted. The decision to carry the fetus is frequently the woman’s choice as the man may disappear or state blatantly that he wants absolutely nothing to do with the child or its mother. The pregnant mother soon realizes that her unwanted pregnancy is only half of the problem as she will have to deal with the communal and familial thrashing that she will be subjected to.

baby did dis really happen to you. this bastards deserved to be shot and castrated. sometimes i do not understand us as men. why we consistently boast masculinity and insist on feminine recognition and appreciation of our manhood. and we never cease to behave like boy z. our society is embued with slackness class has nothing to do with! men are cruel. sometimes it hurts me that men like myself often have to undo the damage that the men in your publication often do to girls like you!

Does the author have a child. why did she use her name. is this a true story or is it fiction! well if its true there is nothing new about this storyy. honey it happens in jamaica every day! every day a girl gets pregnant and the man disappears. i hope women will read this article and learn a lesson from it and that men will read it and become more responsible men and dads
