Kardashian Boycott Movement Gaining Steam

Former fans and concerned citizens have joined forces in calling for the ouster of all things Kardashian from the airwaves.

Fans of reality television can be fickle. All it took for them to turn on Kim Kardashian was a 72-day marriage and a wedding special that seemed just a bit too contrived – even for reality television. Now a movement is growing that is calling for the end of the Kardashian reality show empire, with at least 4,000 supporters already behind the petition.

The organizer of the petition, which has been directed at E! Entertainment, stated: “We feel that these shows are mostly staged and place an emphasis on vanity, greed, promiscuity, vulgarity and over-the-top conspicuous consumption. While some may have begun watching the spectacle as mindless entertainment or as a sort of ‘reality satire,’ it is a sad truth that many young people are looking up to this family and are modeling their appearance and behavior after them.”

The funny thing about this is that most people who would consider themselves fans of the Kardashians would not disagree with anything in that statement. The part about young people looking up to them is definitely disturbing, but we all know it’s happening. It’s hard to imagine a well-adjusted teenager looking at Kim Kardashian or any of member of her family as a role model, but there are countless teens out there without the parental guidance to prevent it.

Ultimately, however, this may signal the beginning of the end of the Kardashians in mainstream entertainment. The fact that they have remained relevant for as long as they have speaks volumes about the lowest common denominator approach to entertainment content. The fact that Americans are capable of sustaining an appetite for such things is nothing short of embarrassing. But if and when the Kardashians go, they’ll simply be replaced by something equally mindless that provides just as poor of a road map for young people to follow in their lives.
