Kashmir
Kashmir is a bone of contention between India and Pakistan.
It is commonly known that India Pakistan Kashmir Dispute is the most dangerous dispute of the world as both are nuclear states.
The Pakistan claim to Kashmir is based on the ‘two nation’ theory. Since Pakistan was created as a nation for the Muslims of India and majority of Kashmir’s population is Muslim, the leadership of Pakistan always felt that Kashmir belongs to Pakistan. It believes that Kashmir is the missing ‘K’ in the word Pakistan. Pakistan considers illegal occupation of Kashmir as violation of human rights, which has given rise to the movement of freedom struggle in Kashmiri people. This freedom struggle is supported by independent groups in Pakistan and its government has always indicated for moral and diplomatic support to Kashmiri movement. Pakistan claims that Kashmiris would vote to join Pakistan and insists on the need of plebiscite to be held in Indian controlled Kashmir.
India maintains that Jammu and Kashmir State has been granted towards India lawfully through an Instrument of Accession, signed by Maharaja of Kashmir. It considers Kashmir as a connected and vital piece of Indian land and believes that people of Kashmir would vote to stay with India. India deems that Pakistani held Kashmir has been illegally taken from India. In respond to Pakistan’s claim for the plebiscite in Kashmir, India insists that since 1952 election have been held in the state which provide proof of the will of the Kashmiri people. India is not in favour of UN plebiscite. India claims that military and intelligence agencies are secretly assisting terrorists in Kashmir.
It should be a priority for US to prevent this dispute from exploding which would be a disaster for human race. US has been playing a passive role, stayed motionless on the killings, rape and torture of Kashmiri people. It has declared that it will mediate on the consent of both parties. The result is that there is no just, peaceful and lasting solution to this conflict.
