Leadership and Nigeria: Corruption is The Bane of The Nigerian Society

From the beggar by the roadside to the leaders of the nation, the ugly stench of corruption is fast permeating the very soul of the Nigerian nation. It has grown so widespread and sophisticated that it threatens to undermine the very fabric of the Nigerian society. From the policeman to the politician, fraud, deception, cheating and bribery seems to dominate the government, the Civil Service, the police and even in the schools. It is most regrettable that the youths and students, who are supposed to be the future of Nigeria, have openly embraced corruption.

What are the causes of corruption? Selfishness and greed. These are the forces that fuel the fire of corruption. They blind the eyes of the corrupt and close his ears to the suffering inflicted by corruption on others. The quest for quick money is what drives people to corruption.

Whatever the form corruption takes in the society, be it cheating, bribery, etc, the consequence is always catastrophic on the populace. Corruption favours a privileged few to the detriment of the rest of the society. In Nigeria, corruption is the root cause of our tainted image, the Niger Delta crisis, the increasing rate of unemployment, election malpractices, etc. it is one evil we must all come together and fight, for the collective good of our dear nation.
