Legalized Marijuana

There does not seem to be an up side for the legalization of marijuana if you look at some of the potential problems involved.

It seems odd to me that the fans of marijuana want it to be legalized. The way it is now might be better than what they are asking for.  Do they think that the government would just legalize it and then let it be? Think through it with a clear head.

The first thing that would happen is that weed would get taxed. It would be in the same category as cigarettes for taxes, so the price would skyrocket. Only properly licensed places could sell any kind of tobacco. Only those 18 and over could legally buy it as well.

Then the commercial tobacco growers would get involved. All the small growers would be put out of business by all kinds of bylaws and regulations that they couldn’t afford to keep up with. Then the commercial growers would stick filters on one end of a joint and smokers would then suck the smoke right to the bottom of their lungs giving more rise to cancer.  The commercial growers would add all kinds of chemicals and perfumes to the joint to make it taste and smell better, again adding carcinogens. There would be grass cigars and cigarillos, and then the packages would all have to have ugly warnings on them. Maybe Waky Tobacky would become a real trade name.

Soon the pharmaceutical industry would be onboard with all kinds of products to help smokers quit the buzz. There would be the pot patch, and nicorette gum for tokers. Romane would show up and hypnotize all the potheads.  Champix would have to have a weed version too.

The tourists would come to Canada from around the world. Potheads of all nationalities would liter our scenery while they smoked their brains out.  Not only would our streets be full of drunk drivers they would add to that the stoned drivers.  The legal limit for how much pot would have to be set, so it would increase from 0 to .08 or whatever is chosen. The legal age would have to be 18, or 19 in some provinces. Airport authorities would have their hands full trying to stop the illegal migration of weed into the USA.

Instead of having to walk through a cloud of cigarette smoke to get into office buildings, the cloud would reek of marijuana instead. Smokers’ breath would have new meaning in Canada. New mints and perfumes would be marketed to cover the stench. Co-workers would be coming to work stoned or taking toke breaks during work hours. Productivity could decrease. More rules would have to be made and enforced. More enforcers would have to be hired. More taxes would be needed to cover costs, so the marijuana tax would be increased.

Tobacco companies would buy out the beautiful orchards and vegetable farms and BC bud would become the main crop on the lower mainland. Mexicans would have to be brought up for the harvest; everyone in BC would be…busy. The restless lobbyists of marijuana legalization would have to take up the cause for magic mushrooms. Otherwise they would be out of work. They would not be alone because there would have a lot of company from the present growers of pot.

Maybe some of this is exaggerated, but not all of it is. When you start to think about what could happen to the marijuana industry if it was legal, it makes keeping it illegal like the more favorable for either side. Get sober and think about it before you lobby for the legalization of marijuana!
