Marijuana: Still a Serious Taboo?

A look at the current views of this loved and hated drug.

Since our parents and grandparents were youthful, marijuana has been happily smoked by some and banned by others, a taboo if you will. But today, marijuana is getting decent publicity and is being accepted by certain authority groups.

On April 20 2008, aka 4/20, rather than having the “pot” smokers drenched by sprinklers, spied on by undercover photographers and arrested by police officers, the University of Colorado welcomed them for the day. Over 10,000 people attended at the location and it turned out to be a peaceful occasion of music and frisbees. About half of that population attended 4/20 festivities at the Canadian Parliament Hill in Ottawa as smoke surrounded the Peace Tower.

Of course, people still have the tendency to pull negative moves when it comes to this drug. In Columbus Ohio, two teenagers filmed a two year old boy being forced to smoke pot and were charged with child endangerment. 3 Houston men were arrested after digging up and using a human skull to smoke marijuana. Just this week, a six year old Nashville student was caught bringing marijuana to his elementary school. Overuse and possession of this drug (among others) has also damaged the careers of musicians including Amy Winehouse and Babyshambles’ Pete Doherty who is quite frequently labeled by the media as Peter Dope-erty.

With some marijuana being used in peaceful regulation and some being abused, is it time to look at legalizing this drug? Health officials say no as it can cause short term memory loss and degeneration of a person’s perceptions, reactions, thought processes and movements.
