Marijuana vs. Alcohol The Discussion

I do ask for those that have chosen to read this article, not to judge me for what I am about to write. I welcome and value any comments or opinions on the topics but I would like to ask you to keep an open mind to what I’m about to discuss.
Marijuana vs Alcohol.

Today Marijuana is widely used in a manner which is similar to alcohol. For those that are unfamiliar with the substance or have never experienced taking it I do ask you to keep an open mind while reading this article.

To say that Marijuana also known as cannabis, resin, green, skunk, herb, weed has been given a bad name over the past decades is an understatement. Our Governments lead us to believe that Marijuana is a dangerous addictive drug. Which if taken will  become a gateway to harder drugs such as MDMA, Speed,Crack/cocaine even heroin. We are led to believe that Marijuana has ruined and destroyed the lifes of adults and teenagers worldwide, that people that smoke cannabis r lazy out of work bums who sit around on a couch all day doing absolutely nothing. We label and put people into boxes because we told what they do is wrong or immoral. We believe what we are told by the governments and even more so when we are unfamiliar with what is being discussed. Some people even believe that people who smoke the green plant are strange, dangerous or even dirty.

However I disagree. The people I know that have or do smoke Marijuana have normal everyday jobs & some even have high paid careers. These people are carpenters, plasterers, decorators, financial advisers, Bank clerks and even fitness instructors. Michael Phelps Olympic gold medalist has used cannabis, again he was labelled and put into a box. These people aren’t falling over in the street, laying like like lemons in the middle of the road. They don’t go around smashing shop windows or causing fights among friends. Most people when they smoke the substance are calm, relaxed, and pleasant to be around. They pull their weight, they go to work they compete in sports activities and they socialize with other people with ease. Adults may consume Cannabis before a dinner party, Friends that are kicking a ball about may share a few puffs on a spliff. Couples may consume the drug while just enjoying time alone in the evening.

It is simply something that these responsible adults choose to do & frequently it is something they choose to do specifically instead of alcohol. And for good reason! Alcohol is more toxic, more addictive, more harmful to the body, more likely to result in injuries, and more likely to lead to interpersonal violence than marijuana. For an example pick up a newspaper have a look through and see how many deaths are caused by somebody drinking alcohol. Now ask yourself how many times have you seen the same the same news story caused by somebody that smokes cannabis? My guess not as many. This leads to the ultimate question why is Alcohol legal and Cannabis is banned? If Alcohol causes more damage to our bodies why is it legal? Most users of cannabis which i have asked to discuss this with me say;

    What a fabulous article, Rose. I understand exactly what you are saying. I was a bartender for many years and worked in one bar that was quite dangerous. We had an outside patio that I let a few of the pot smokers enjoy their puffs. They never caused me one ounce of trouble but I sure can’t say that about the alcohol drinkers…I have been in abusive relationships with alcoholics and my life started out at a young age finding out just what alcohol can do to some people…My father was a nasty, abusive drunk..I don’t think I need to elaborate. I will admit I do drink but it doesn’t control my life or my actions….I believe they should legalize cannabis and always did…But I’ve been told by weed smokers that if it was ever legalized, it wouldn’t be a good grade of weed….I’m not sure about that, but I tend to believe them..Most of the people I know, grow it themselves, never sell it but they love to share….Sorry for rambling but this is a topic close to my heart….Well done, Rose!!

    I agree, it all comes down to a simple concept.

    Someone can go to work high and still function, some actually prefer it and say it makes them a better worker (though the truth in that is arguable). Nobody ever goes to work drunk, because someone who is drunk can’t still function normally.

    And nobody wants to go to work hungover. Really they are two opposite ends of the intoxication spectrum, and are judged one for the worse and one for the better.

    Having been an alcoholic and addict for about 20 years on a daily basis, at the time, I too, could only see the benefits of using. Now being sober for over 27 years, I can only see those 20 years having been a waste upon my youth and all I could have accomplished. Drugs (and alcohol is a drug) are a waste upon a person’s potential, and a waste upon a person’s “mind.” They also “numb” a person to REALITY and dealing with it. In my opinion, drugs are the tools by which the cowards fade into the woodwork for most do it and left are those who are the brave and wish to accomplish something with their lives and mankind.

    I should add, in 20 years of addiction, I helped no one, not even myself. Since quiting, I have helped “thousands” to overcome their own excuses for living, addiction being one of them.

    This is exactly why i write this article, We aren’t talking about cannabis being the cause again it is alcohol. I’m glad John helps people that suffer from drug and alcohol issues, but like i said unless you have experienced marijuana how on earth would you know the effects. I can admit I’ve had a smoke in my time and like i said in my article there is lots of talented people that smoke the substance, I know hundreds that smoke cannabis and they achieve life goals that people like us can only dream of achieving and they work hard to get there too. Thank you for all your opinions so far on this article.

    Wow what a tough subject, I grew up in the sixties grass scented the air and my father was an alcoholic and I left home at sixteen, I do know two men that have no motivation although lovely layed back individuals, that smoke pot everyday, and being a Nurse I think it does have pain relief benefits, but being a narcotic I believe it can open your mind to all kind of things that are not wholesome, moderation is the key to life , but as a Christian since 1982, I believe some drugs open your mind to things that are evil and I know how that must sound but sorcery and pharmacolgy come from the same root word and people that follow the occult and not God see things and give themsevles over to spirits not of God, I think many people do start with pot and end up deeply addicted just like those on percocets a narcotic is a narcotic and most can get sucked in to a horrible cycle, I choose life John 14:6

    I used to drink beer, never smoked marijuana but know many people who still smoke the ‘weed’ lol from way back in the day and have successful lives, homes, cars and security. I never viewed the two substances in the same light. And I have known my share of alcoholics and the behavior is a striking contrast! Alcohol is legal but its legalization did not teach people how to drink in moderation. It is dangerous and what it does to the internal organ is usually beyond repair! So I definitely get the point in you honest article on the subject! Thanks for sharing. :)

    Weed is no where as bad as the drugs you get from the pharmacy
    just over a common cold. The law classifies weed as a narcotic, but if you think about it narcotics have no simple possession. You will get the same sentence no matter how many pills you have. Therefore, weed is not a narcotic. Any thing under a ounce is simple possession, just a ticket. Narcotics are man made, God made marijuana.

    Excellent post. There’s no such thing as a bad thing, there’s bad choices. When you have control over the habit its fine, however most times the habit takes over. I believe an addiction stems from an individuals eagerness to seek a thrill and become a slave to it.

    Good article and topic for debate. Everyone is entitled to their own beliefs and point view. As a writer an online blogger, I have felt judged many times for having my own opinions. Sometimes people will attack others when they disagree with your way of thinking. screw them.. lol
