Massachusetts Election Results

The beginning for Obama… Or the end?

The future of our country in many ways is at stake today, and until very recently, no one in the United States had a clue.  In fact, while the most important election in decades was about to take place right under their nose, most Massachusetts residents didn’t even know what was coming.  Yet the future indeed rests on the Massachusetts election results.

     A brief summary:

The late Sen. Edward M Kennedy’s vacated United States Senate seat is up for grabs today.  The candidates are state Attorney General Martha Cokely is the favorite; in a state where 75% of the population are registered Democrats, and which hasn’t elected a republican in decades she was considered a shoo in.

Enter state Senator Scott Brown.  Scott Brown is, politically speaking, no one.  At the same time, he mey be one of the most important Republican candidates in the history of the party.

If Republican state Sen. Scott Brown defeats Democratic Attorney General Martha Coakley, it would put the seat in the hands of an opponent of the bill, taking awaythe Democrats’ 60-vote majority needed to push the health care bill through the Senate. After taking more than a year  to produce signature legislation, Democrats could very well be out of luck.

And so, several weeks ago, the Republican Party… not just that of Massachusetts, but the entire party… launched a huge last minite coup attempt.  Millions upon millions of dollars poured into the campaingn, including all day television ads.  The attempt to steal the Massachusetts election results focused on one thing; state Senator Scott Brown being that 41st vote.  No one, at this point, could tell you a thing about him; he could be a Nazi, and no one would care.  As long as he represents that 41st vote.   God bless our bipartisan system, right?

So expect to hear about the Massachusetts election results quite a bit today.  It will decide just how far Obama is able to go.
