Men Sharing Condoms in Africa

Strange things are happening in Africa. While people living on HIV/AIDS spend millions of dollars in seminars and conferences that unravel nothing, poor men are sharing condoms, borrowing, washing them and returning while their wives have sex in exchange for food, and then we wonder why Aids is killing millions!

They borrow the sheaths, wash them and return them to their owners

Kaman, will you be doing it tonight?

Hmmmmmmmh, well, I don’t think so, why?

You can help me that thing, the one… you understand?

OK…but wash it well before you return it! He whispers, handing over a sheath that has long lost its elasticity…

The condoms have holes big enough to allow a lizard pass through

Laugh if you want but that thing the poor guy is trying to borrow in low tones is actually a condom. He at least knows that a condom will help him keep pregnancy at bay, he knows that a condom will protect him from the dreaded HIV, but what he doesn’t know is that the sheath he is borrowing has been washed so many times that it now has holes big enough to let a lizard pass through, leave alone a sperm cell or a virus!

Africa has the largest number of Aids cases

What has been the result? Africa has the largest percentage of HIV patients and the numbers continue rising every day and night. Families have more children than they can affford to raise while men, women and youth keep spending millions of dollars in seminars and conferences when the real problem is actually ignorance and poverty.

Poverty and ignorance have made HIV prevalence worse

The people who need to get the information are not getting it, and when they get it they have no means to protect themselves despite the will. Advertisements on TV, skits and all those measures put in place are very elitist and do not reach the very people who need to benefit because most have no access to television, some can not read while many others have no idea what is required of them.

Women are having sex for food

Who will tell these men that sharing condoms will not protect them from anything leave alone HIV? Who will tell those involved that to control HIV they need to address poverty and ignorance? Women are having sex for food, men are wearing worn out sheaths thinking they are safe.

Who will save my dear continent?

Sub Saharan Africa is bleeding but nobody wants to admit that we have a problem, a big one. Is it any wonder that the best brains are running away to the west? Is it any wonder that those who have the means would rather escape their home? The rest of us have taken a wait and see position as men wash and hung condoms on the clothesline to dry before using them again!

This is really sad and a very serious matter. Are there any organizations that can donate condoms to the people in the African community? HIV and Aids is killing people worldwide. What role is the government playing here? Women need to stop bearing children if they can’t afford to because it’s usually the children who end up suffering. Protection doesn’t seem to be working because sharing condoms is spreading more diseases than actually helping. Something needs to be done to help these poor women feed their children, but I am afraid that poverty and ignorance like you state in your article has a lot to do with it. How is this issue going to get resolved?

@d1dezire – actually, in my experience the more disgusting things are the ones that turns out to be true.

Anyway – very interesting post to say the least; thank you for the share.

It’s always the poor who suffer. Always the poor who suffer the most. Yet our neglect always returns to mawl and bite us. The elite care very little yet disease strikes the rich and poor alike. So then why not care for all and stop the spread of HIV?

I’m sorry to hear about that, shocking news. We in the west forget how some in Africa are suffering so severely

Nice article, I wonder why can’t they fine a cure for aids, wouldn’t it be cheaper to cure, because its so expensive to treat.

It is sad to know that they reuse condoms. Why don’t set up a program to educate?

Yes Africa does suffer greatly but a huge amount of help is given by the West. A lot of appropriate help is given in the form of doctors, teachers and equipment etc but mostly by voluntary agencies such as churches. There’s a lot of sides to the story of Africa and her poverty.

Many organizations from the so-called West are donating condoms to be distributed in Africa for free, that’s a fact. The problem is, not everyone in Africa have access to them. Poor infrastructure, lack of education, and traditional beliefs are just among the myriad of reasons why free condoms (and other aids for that matter) are not reaching the ones in need of them.

Wow! Brand new condoms are not 100% effective in preventing pregnancy and only 90% effective at stopping the HIV virus. If the only education getting through is that condoms make sex safe, that message isn’t even true with new condoms.

More money is raised for HIV/AIDS than any other single disease. This proves that just throwing money at a situation won’t solve it, especially if the money is not being spent where it will help.

All the food that is being shipped, and medical supplies, condoms are that one important staple that is overlooked. This is a dangerous practice.

I remember decades ago, when condoms were being distributed in Africa and demonstrated by unrolling them into the rough ends of shovel handles…

Months later when the aid workers returned to check on their efficacy, they were met with angry mobs: the condoms (often, still on the ends of shovel handles and other phallic-shaped objects in and around the home) did NOT prevent their wives from becoming pregnant…

Some may doubt the truth of this anecdotal story, but millions are dying because it IS true. The writer is not meaning to say the holes are literally that big. S/he is trying to get us to pay attention to the plight of these poor people. There must be other ways to help. Condoms aren’t the only way, neither is abstinence education. We need to really help these people.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. It is a Godsend, and may it wake us up, and put light into the hearts of the ones meant to go there and help.
