More Guns, or Better Gun Control are Not The Solution to School Shootings

More guns, fewer guns, arming teachers, these are not solutions for the problem of school shootings, these are only band-aids to a problem. We have been teaching people that killing is how you become happy. We need to raise people to be happy, not that happiness is created only by killing.

I have seen a lot of talk about guns and gun control in the wake of the Newtown School shooting. Many people suggest allowing teachers to carry guns. Is this a solution?

First of all what happens when that teacher has a bad day? We all have stress in our lives, some more than others. Suppose that teacher is having a stressful time. Maybe they are having problems in their relationship, a family member is terminally ill, they are in debt and are facing foreclosure, then one snotty kid just pushes their buttons wrong that day and the teacher snaps.

Another risky scenario involving armed teachers is if a group of students overpowers the teacher and takes the gun.

Any criminal looking for a gun would consider a way to get a gun from a teacher.

Armed guards are not really a good solution either. Imagine what it does to a student to see armed guards daily. We talk about how horrible it is for kids in war torn countries to be exposed to seeing such things so why allow it in the school?

Gun control is not the answer to school shootings either, the criminals will find ways to get guns, or other ways to kill children if that is their goal. The Oklahoma bombing (killing children in a daycare) was done using fertilizer!

Both of these things are band-aid solutions to deal with a problem rather than addressing the problem head on. Why are school shootings occurring?

The first school shooting I had heard of was in LA and is now infamous in the song “I Don’t Like Mondays”, in which a teenage girl opened fire on an elementary school because she didn’t like Mondays.

Since then there have been numerous shootings (at schools and in other places of work). In some cases the shootings were by students in response to being bullied. In other cases the shootings were the result of stress. In any case we must address the cause of these situations rather than waiting for more to occur.

Solutions to the Problem

Reduce stress.  I know, easier said than done, but a lot of stress is created by the rat-race world we live in and continue to perpetuate and force on our children

Quit pushing attaining “The American Dream” on everyone, for some the disappointment with not being able to reach this dream is becoming a nightmare.

Improve the American Health Care system, (including mental health) it should be free. People should not be forced to go into debt because of health.

Increase taxes to the wealthy (to a fair share). I read recently that between 1945 and 1975 America was its most prosperous and that is also when taxes to the wealthy were higher, without so many breaks and loopholes.

Reduce the climate of “Fear”, create a climate of hope. People are growing up thinking that killing is how you solve your problems. We must not allow this to continue. This is a subconscious training. What can we expect when a Liberal President brags about killing the demon Osama bin Laden?

If anyone is keeping score – it is not what the American founding fathers had in mind. Video games, and the media keep reminding us that killing our enemies is good. We cannot think this way, we need to raise people to be happy, not that happiness is created only by killing.

It seems to me that the problem is a society in which too many people are angry most of the time

Gun control is a fair answer actually; look at the difference in numbers between US shootings and in fact any civilised country where there are strict gun controls.

True. Even in the UK, with stricter gun controls, we have our incidents. But we do share some of that **competitive** culture. As an American said: **It is not a gun issue but a mental heath issue!**

you have your point , Mark. It is NOT gun control or more guns that might prevent future incidents like what happened at this school. I guess, it is emotional depression that is to blame. The govt. MUST seek the reasons and address them all. In tthe Connecticut incident, the reason is the perpetrator can’t cope up with his parents Divorce.

Hi Mark. I agree with you that it is not a gun control issue, but that is where our agreement ends.

I believe that the reason as to why there have been more shootings, killings, wars and anger, is because the world is more and more turning their backs on GOD. With so many people believing that it is GOD’S fault for all of the pain, suffering and problems in the world, but many of these same people have not ever read the Holy Bible from cover-to-cover, and even more importantly, have never put into action what the WORD OF GOD teaches in their own lives is the real issue here.

We cannot do anything apart from GOD. Every time a people believes that they know what is best for someone else they discover in the long run that they couldn’t have possibly known the outcome in the future and most of the time their decision makes the situation even worse than before.

Mental Health professionals have their own share of personal and private problems, so what makes these people better able to solve another person’s problems. I know a heck of a lot about the mental health industry first hand having experienced it first hand. Oh, the stories that I could tell regarding my own personal experience of living a life when I was much, much younger in the confines of a state operated mental health hospital for over a year straight. Unless you have experienced the treatment first hand in a state run mental health hospital then you have no clue what the treatment is really like as a patient, but I do.

The hospital did not solve my problems. The drugs that they gave me did not solve my problems. The treatments did not solve my problems, but only created more problems. What or better yet who solved my mental health problems was none other than GOD ALMIGHTY the LORD JESUS CHRIST.

What I had been suffering from, the doctors said there wasn’t a cure for and that the best that they could do is treat the problem by controlling it with special drugs. They tested me blood daily and watched me closely for signs that they drugs were working and not causing my organs to shutdown. That is all the doctors could do for me.

I put my faith in GOD and asked Him to heal me and GOD healed me. The healthcare professionals tested, tested and tested me some more and were shocked that they could not find anything at all wrong with me. For many weeks, I had appointments to see the doctors and have blood drawn, but the results always returned the same – all things are normal. The doctors said to my parents that considering what I had been suffering they have never witnessed a complete turnaround like this in their entire career. It just don’t happen! It is impossible – there is no known cure.

When I told the doctors that it was GOD ALMIGHTY the LORD JESUS CHRIST that had healed me, they just laughed it off, but they could not dispute my testimony either. They just did not believe it that’s all. But, they don’t have to believe it, because I know who healed me and that is all that matters.

The more the world eliminates GOD ALMIGHTY JESUS CHRIST out of the public, then the more the world will become even a more dangerous and hateful place to live. The more people choose to place their faith in their own self, then the more problems that they will bring onto themselves. The more the world governments distance themselves from the teaching of the WORD OF GOD, then the more governments will try to rule over their people with absolute control and with deadly results for the populace. Government is never the answer, only GOD ALMIGHTY and the WORD OF GOD is the answer to all of the world’s problems.

    Sincerely,

    Living By Grace

I agree that strict gun control is needed. We already have background checks, but the real problem stems from the fact that when God was taken out of the schools, then something else took his place. We as a society do not respect life as we once did. We need to teach our children the sanctity of life. Will this compelety get rid of the problem, no, why? Because there will always be evil in the world to tempt people to commit vicious acts.

I don’ t think any one movie, TV series, political statement or game can be blamed for the senseless violence. I think it’s the sum of all of the above plus the stress plus health care plus the recession plus everything else.

And I don’t think those suffering from mental and emotional problems will find any relief. The American aversion to taxes along with the conservative myths about the unemployed and those dependent on Entitlement programs is hurting the truly needy.

The truth is that people are all for resolving the problem long as taxes don’t go up. Hence, the hopes of preventing future massacres fades. Mentally ill and emotionally disturbed people go without badly needed therapy and care. Uninsured ill people go without proper healthcare.

And our society will unwittingly allow the violence to continue. And meanwhile these who don’t know are too to care.

I guess my last comment was blocked. That’s too bad. The last line was really funny!

Great article. I agree with you. Guns don’t kill. People do and people kill because they are angry, depressed, mentally ill, even jealousy and greed come into the picture. The world is spinning out of balance and out of control and at such a fast pace some people simply cannot cope and so they strike out. Good share.
