The aftermath of September 11, 2001, brought home the realities of international terrorism. Our national security is of topmost concern and we have to tackle groups of terrorists that will fight with us using whatever means are necessary. They continue to fight with us and seek to replace our economic and political strength in the world arena. Recently Americans have been waging battle on a number of fronts that include political, economic and even biological.

How the international terror came to hound us

The truly first incident that sparked this international terror on our social is undoubtedly the 1993 attempt of bombing the ‘World Trade centre’ The Al Queda that is an Islamist organization tried to blow up the building by using chemical explosives. On it’s failure, it launched especially virulent attacks on the American embassies around the world.  In the aftermath of 9/11 attacks, we invaded and raid Afghanistan and were successful to certain extent in rooting out the Taliban that are staunch supporters of the Al Queda movement. This military war was known as ‘Operation Enduring Freedom’.

Mistakes that we may have made

Many political believers maintain that the biggest mistake that America did was to invade Iraq in wake of the Afghanistan invasion. After receiving some intelligence reports that Saddam Hussein, the president of Iraq was building a nuclear arsenal, using yellowcake uranium from Nigeria, our forces invaded the country. The deployment of the forces was moved away from Afghanistan and this helped the Taliban to regroup in the border areas of Pakistan, especially the tribal areas where the Government of Pakistan wields no power. It’s here that Taliban was able to gain back their military strength.

How recent events cast a shadow on our internal security

The Bush presidency had a lot of mixed reactions. Now the Americans wish to know how President Obama will lead this war on terror and preserving our national security. Recent events have shown that the situation in Afghanistan is worsening. More so with the recent upcoming elections, people are wary of how the tide will go. Iraq seems more on a road to recovery. The recent elections in Iran have shown that radical Islam in central Asia is still very much alive and affects the lives of those that live here.

Whether the Obama administration will be able to tackle the threats and able to counter them will be for the history to decide. All that the citizens and the elected representative can do is remain calm and vigilant and tackle the threats that our country faces.
