Most Unlucky Pirates Sentenced to Life in U.s
Five Somali men who tried to attack a U.S. Navy ship sent to combat pirates just not knowing what it is, were sentenced to life imprisonment by a U.S. court.
Somalis, all between 20 and 25 years were actually fishermen and said they were asked by real pirates to capture a fishing vessel that had been threatened, but that they were promised thousands of dollars for it.
Unfortunately for them, in November last year, attacked the American warship USS Nicholas, who was just in an anti-piracy mission. The five pirates were captured after a few amateur shots and after their boat was sinking fast.
Sentencing him to life imprisonment for piracy is mandatory, according to a U.S. law for over 100 years old. In addition, they received an additional sentence of 80 years for crimes related to firearms. They are the first convicted of piracy in the U.S. in 1820, while those found guilty were hanged.
Somalis say they will appeal this sentence. Piracy in Somalia has reached high levels in recent years, as the main problem in the west Indian Ocean.
