Muhammad Ali: A Great American
More than a boxer Ali was the model for the "American Dream"
What’s often overlooked about Muhammad Ali is that he is a great humanitarian and spokesman for the poor, elderly and the sick. Ali sent a check for $100,000 to a Jewish senior citizens home for the handicapped to keep it from closing. When asked about the generous gesture Ali said that since “nobody else came up with the money- it don’t matter whether they were white or Jewish -somebody’s got to make a stand”. He wasn’t about to let a place close where “poor crippled people gather to eat, converse, draw and color- it’s what kept them alive”.
Muhammad Ali personified the American Dream. His hard work, perseverance, and intelligence allowed him to achieve his goals. He called America the best country in the world while in the eyes of the rest of the world he was a brash young American. Ali will not only be recognized as one of the greatest boxers of all time but will be remembered as a fighter for religious freedoms and racial equality as well as for his humility and generous nature. Ali encompassed everything that makes America great and will always remain a larger than life figure, respected and loved by the world over.
