My Favorite Thing About Hindu Culture
My opinion on Sati, a suicidal devotion.
My favorite thing about Hindu culture is Sati. I’m not a sexist male pig or anything, I just think it takes a lot of courage to jump on a bonfire and die with your husbands charring remains. I can’t imagine how painful it must be to burn to death, and here you have women doing it willfully. Granted a lot of them probably felt great peer pressure and threat of exile if they didn’t do it back in the old days, but at least the first woman had to have done it of her own free will. I think it shows a great deal of devotion to their husband and their faith, and that’s something I can respect. Id imagine most people pick a festival or something as their favorite thing, but I don’t care much for group activities and celebration, every religion and culture has that, but women burning themselves alive while their husbands are cremated is something I’ve only heard of Hindus doing. I don’t really like religion, I’m an atheist myself, and for the most part I think religion has ruined the world. The only things I’ve ever liked about religion are the people who are completely devoted to it enough to give their lives; they’re the only people doing it right in my opinion. Every religious person I know caters the religion to themselves instead of their selves to the religion. I feel that the people willing to set their selves ablaze for what they believe in, whether it’s the policies of Vietnam or the love for their husband, are some of the only people worthy of respect.
