My Love of Dogs Part I

I have loved dogs my entire life. These four legged creatures have peered into my very soul and have offered up a potpourri of unconditional love and devotion unmatched by humankind.

I have loved dogs my entire life. I can not remember a time I wasn’t drawn to my friends. These four legged creatures have peered into my very soul and have offered up a potpourri of unconditional love and devotion unmatched by humankind. There is an aura around animals, but especially dogs and the loyalty they exhibit is almost divine in nature. I can not imagine life without dogs. I have often said that people who do not love animals suffer from a major flaw in their character.

I don’t know why, maybe because it was easy to say, but all of my childhood dogs were named “Skippy.” My first “Skippy” didn’t last long. My parents and I occupied the second floor of a two story house, with the owner living on the first level. I was only 5 years old when we ventured off to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) in search for my new friend. There he was, standing so proudly in his chain linked dog run, with tail wagging in wild anticipation of finding a loving family.  Skippy was a happy and majestic English Setter mix breed and he was a good sized boy. I was ecstatic, until only after a few days, when the owner informed my parents the dog was too big and he had to go. I vividly recall stomping around the owner as he sat on his front steps, tears flowing down my face like a torrential downpour, after we had returned from bringing the dog back to the shelter. In my little memory bank, this one incident took away my boyish innocence and was my initial introduction to sadness and loss.

Within one year we had all moved to another two family house, although this time we lived on the ground floor. It was an inner city house, yet convenient for my dad who only had to walk across the street into the factory where he worked. We lived with my grandmother, grandfather and my uncle Rodger, who was like an older brother because of only a four year age difference. I guess, by today’s standards, we were considered poor, yet we didn’t feel that way. Our home was filled with the glow of family, closeness and love. Still, there was a void in my heart, as it ached for another dog, so off we went, back to the SPCA.

Freethinking, your appreciation for our four legged friends really shines through in this little piece –I too love dogs — and it just pains me when they are being abused–

That was wonderfully written. I can remember in complete detail every dog I have shared my life with, now we have two Kole and Katie. Katie was the muse for my children’s book but Kole also had a role in it. Dogs are the dearest creatives alive. I mean if not why would dog spelled backwards be God.

Aww, this is so sweet. I am more of a cat lover myself, but dogs really make great pets.

I agree – no dog is born mean, they can be made mean… and that says something else for the human involved. Dogs really are man’s best friend… and I loved the tale about Skippy II… following you everywhere… awww.

Sometimes dogs can be more than humans in terms of loyalty. Some people who I considered friends turned against me for some reasons. Dogs are always loyal to their masters even when they are subjected to abuse.

Can’t wait to know what happened to Skippy. We need loving dog owners like you Dennis. I’ve been around dogs since I was a kid. I always cry when they die. :)

Dogs are lovely friends-they love you unconditionally-if you should have no human friends at all for some reasons, just have a dog! Great post!

Thank you for your article with great inner sharing about dogs. Most of all I am glad to know another who loves and cherishes animals. I too have had animals all my life and find I don’t really care to be friends with people who don’t like them. It is truly the owner that can make a dog a PET.

Interesting experience. I also had a dog when I was a child. When we moved from big house to a small one, it’s gone. I had no idea what parents did to that poor dog.

Dennis, Skippy was a Bush Kangaroo! That you called your dogs Skippy is proof positive that you didn’t have Skippy on American TV and that is a shame. The lyrics to the Skippy theme tune included:

Skippy, Skippy, Skippy the bush kangaroo
Skippy, Skippy, Skippy are friends ever true

…off to read part 2 – really like this series

I am with you on this, my friend. I remember a beagle I had many years ago. I named him Orville, but somehow that was not quite expressive enough, so he became Orville Orville, which was who he was.

Skippy no.1 had to be returned to SPCA. That’s a sad moment indeed. He must have been so happy coming home with you. There is no word to describe the love and affection shown by a dog to it’s owner and I wholeheartedly wish that all pet owners out there will be more like you. What a fantastic share. Part II, here I come!

I’ve recently lost 2 of my beloved pooches, they were 17 years old. I still have my little Chico and he is 12 years old. I too have used the name “Chico” for a few of my dogs. :)
