My Opinion on Capital Punishment
An opinion about capital punishment.
Capital punishment is not moral, not by any stretch of the imagination. I would say that I believe in capital punishment, but not because I think I’m incredibly moral. I act more on my feelings than on rationality, and I know that if I had a loved one become the victim of a horrendous homicide I would demand retribution. After reading the views of Haag and Bedau, I would have to take Bedau’s side, as he makes a strong argument and backs it up with “evidence.”
One reason capital punishment is wrong: Innocent people have been executed. It is my belief that it is not worth taking one innocent life and continue to use capital punishment as a deterrent to people who might commit serious crimes.
Another reason capital punishment is wrong: “Capital punishment is not a deterrent to capital crimes.” The majority of people have the inclination to murder. We all have our breaking points. Bedau says that “most capital crimes are committed in the heat of the moment.” I concur.
My final reason for rejecting capital punishment: “Capital punishment is unjustified retributions. If capital punishment were used “fairly,” it would mean that only murderers were executed (I would also be happy if rapists and child predators were executed). Criminals being executed for drug trafficking and treason is unfounded. The punishment should fit the crime.
