Non-animal Tests: Futuristic Research

Welcome to future of research and technology. There are now a wide range of tests used instead of animal testing.

Most of them are approved for use in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OCED) and/or the European Union.

Cell-based tests:

These are being developed to predict sensitization. L’oreal has done research in this field.

Skin sensitization:

Computer software predict skin sensitization by picking up chemical structures associated with allergic reactions.

Skin absorption:

Human volunteer data is used in vitro to test skin absorption.

Eye irritation:

There are four well-established methods using isolated animal tissues which can identify severe eye irritants without using living animals.

Physiologically-based biokinetic(PBBK) computer models:

These tests are being developed to predict the absorption and distribution of chemicals within the body.

Human studies:

these include patch tests for skin irritancy and compatibility testing for cosmetic products.
