Non-Organic vs. Organic

Farming has been around almost as long as human beings. Farming use to be a means of survival for very many people. It was what most people did before the automobile and industrial age came around. Farmers are using many methods in order to fight infestation from pest and to produce high quality crops.

The first method they use is herbicides and pesticides. The herbicides and pesticides combat weeds and insects. Many of the toxic chemicals are being found in the crops. Now the FDA has banned herbicides and pesticide from being used. However we are still being exposed to the chemicals because many crops are imported from other countries.

Contaminated sewage sludge is the second method many use. Many thought it was a great idea to use sewage sludge. They thought it was a great idea because it got rid of the human waste using it as fertilizer. It was also very easy to obtain and very cheap. However it has been shown to contribute to chronic illnesses if used in very large amounts.

The third method they use is animal’s remains, hormones and antibiotics. They use these products to quickly fatten up animals. Even though hormones are illegal and expensive they are being injected into animals to fatten them up for the market. They use antibiotics to keep the animals alive until they make it to the butcher. The problem we face with this is that we ingest these antibiotics when we eat meat.

Since we ingest antibiotics we are becoming immune to their abilities to fight bacteria. So when we get sick antibiotics have no effect on us. Carcass meal is fed to animals in the diary and meat industry. Carcass meal is now believed to be a contributing factor to mad cow disease. This is very dangerous for us to ingest.

The last method that was used was irradiation. They expose spices to radiation in order to kill microorganisms and bacteria. Irradiation can do more harm than good because it can lead to disease. Studies have shown that chemicals are toxic and can cause illnesses and even death. The government is making changes to fight the threat in the agricultural industry. They are urging farmers to switch to something that isn’t so threaten and safer for people.

Environmentally humane economical systems are what organic farming is all about. Two things are needed in order for this to be able to work effectively. The first thing that is needed is fertile land to plant an array of crops. The other thing that is required is people that are willing to learn this technique of farming. The Europeans call it ecological agriculture. This method of farming is relying heavily on the fact that you take care of the environment.

Fertilizer should not be used in organic farming like it is in non-organic farming. So the soil should be able to performer for many years with no added substances. Pesticides should never be used in organic farming. Only soil organisms should be used. Organic materials, livestock manure and crop residue should be recycled.

Crop rotation should be able to control the insect infestation and weed growth. Don’t temper with animal genes with genetic engineering. Allow the animals to live out its life as it should. So which do you think is better? The organic method is better and safer because it does not use toxic chemicals.

It is incredibly hard to stop produce that is not organic from entering the market. Customer demand is the cause of this because some products have to be imported. Other countries do not have to follow rules and regulations set forth by the U.S. government. The best thing to do is buy only organic food. If you can’t find the organic make a substitute. Over the past 16 years the numbers of organic forms has doubled. The growth will continue as long as people see the big picture.
