North Georgia Men Plotting Terrorist Attacks
A group of men in Toccoa, Georgia have been charged with plotting to commit terrorist attacks in large cities all over the country with the toxic agent ricin. Customers at the Waffle House in Toccoa thought they were just a bunch of old retired men meeting to pass the time of day. But they were planning attacks on private citizens and the government, according to warrants served on them by special agents. In Atlanta they planned to throw out ricin on interstate I-75, 41, and 285.
Unbelievable as it is, three men from the little town of Toccoa in North Georgia are charged with plotting domestic terrorism. They are all retired, friendly people that neighbors never suspected. Their plans were to produce the biological toxin ricin and spread it on major roads in major cities such as Washington, New Orleans and Atlanta. Michael Trost, one of the men’s defense attorney denied they had anything criminal in mind, he said, “They were just grumpy old men talking.” Frederick W. Thomas, a retired space engineer, 73, was said to be the ring leader. The other accused were Ray H. Adams, 55 and Dan Roberts, 65.

They met at Thomas’s house where the meeting was secretly recorded by an FBI informant, and Thomas appointed himself as leader. Roberts said he knew people in Habersham county who had something called ricin that could kill people with a very small amount. He told them it was made from castor beans and they discussed ways to get the beans. Another meeting was held at Shoney’s restaurant in Lavonia and Thomas referred to his military service, saying he thought they could hold off a SWAT team. The FBI informant said that Adams had a metal box that contained a list of poisons and their effects and a recipe for ricin. On the piece of paper was written, “You take this and in four days you die.”
Thomas and the informant drove to Atlanta to case out two buildings for attacks, the ATF building on Century Parkway and the IRS building on West Peachtree Street. From June through August the group began to move from plans to action. In September the FBI informant recorded a meeting with Roberts at the Waffle House in Toccoa. They drove to Roberts house and met with a Samuel Crump, a contractor who had worked for Atlanta based Centers for Disease Control. Crump told them he could make ricin, according to the search warrants. Crump said he would make about 10 pounds of ricin and they would put it out in different cities at the same time. The informant asked what it took to make ricin, Crump replied “just some seed, I need one more ingredient that I’ll get today.” Documents verified that Crump had worked as a lab tech.
At a later date the informant walked to a shed with Adams and Crump and saw Adams show Crump a large container almost full of castor beans. When the state and federal agents raided Adams and Crumps homes they found a cache of weapons, ingredients for deadly ricin and explosives at Adams home. At Crumps home, they found a book on hazardous materials, caster beans, and white powder in a cup. Between Adams and Crump, special agents sized instructions for making ricin, a machete, a dozen guns, toxic plant guide, two buckets of castor beans and castor plants.

This is something to take seriously. I don’t agree with the defense attorney’s position the men were grumpy and didn’t have anything criminal in mind. If they didn’t have any intention of carrying on with this plan, then why would they have a list of the poisons and their effects plus a recipe of the toxic agent. Good thing the meeting was secretly recorded by FBI informants.

They definitely meant harm. Now, they have the rest of their lives to plot and plan, but, they will be in a federal prison for the rest of their lives. Since they hate people so much, why not just shoot each other? Now, that’s a plan.

Those guys were really really grumpy. Ricin is not very difficult to make, and it is deadly. Why would they want to do something like this?
