Obama Administration Boosts Gun Sales Nationwide

Firearm enthusiasts feared the worst but so far it hasn’t happened.

Exact sales and ownership data relating to firearms in the U.S. is unavailable since no federal gun registry exists (thank goodness).  For instance, weapon sales from private homes, gun shows and flea markets go unaccounted for but the F.B.I. and The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms both agree that background check numbers from the National Instant Criminal Background Check system are proportional to gun sales.  Following are the five state with the most gun sales from the most recent figures in inverse order.

In 2007 only one state in the union would allow college students to carry concealed weapons to class–Utah.  It ranks number five in gun sales with 8.2 per 100 residents.  Presently other states are fighting for student gun rights as well.

More and more states are passing lax gun laws but Montana was among the first and that ranks big sky country number four in sales at 8.8 guns per 100 residents.  According to the 2009 Montana Firearms Freedom Act, guns, ammunition and accessories manufactured and retained in the state are exempt from federal gun control laws.

Whiles it’s not the top gun owning state, West Virginia is the top illegal gun exporter.  Guns from the mountaineers end up in Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, Ohio and New York according to a report by the Mayors Against Illegal Guns using trace data from the U.S. B.A.T.  West Virginia ranks number three with 15.4 guns per 100 folks.

Here’s a paradox.  Wyoming is a state with one of the highest with one of the highest gun ownership rates in the nation and one of the lowest murder rates.  In 2007, Wyoming had only 16 homicides statewide.  However, according to the University of Wyoming, last year the state had the fifth highest suicide rate (21.1 per 100,000)–double the national average.  Firearms were the leading method.  Wyoming comes in at number two with 30.2 gun sales per 100 residents.

Kentucky folks love their guns and they spread them around, too.  Firearms from Kentucky that have been used in violent crimes have been found in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee.  Next year officials will consider legislation that will strengthen  gun rights among its citizens, according to the Lexington Examiner, exempting all domestic firearms and ammo from federal gun regulation.   The bluegrass state tops the list with 141.8 guns per 100 residents.

My adopted home state of Florida is well down the list at number 41 but new legislation this year puts muggers on notice.  It extends the homeowner’s Stand-Your-Ground law to the street level.  Before a homeowner was allowed to used deadly force to protect life and property if an intruder was entering the house.  Now, anyone who is properly permitted to carry a weapon, who believes his life or the life of a family member is at risk, no matter where he is may shoot to kill without fear of prosecution.  Mugger beware.

Well being a Brit I just don’t get the gun thing, I must admit I am more then happy by the way we do things over here, I do fear however that it won’t be long before we go down the same route.
I pray I will be well gone from this world before it happens over here.

I am so grateful there are so few guns being carried in Britain. I’d be scared to walk down the street. An interesting article, Ken.

Yes a truly staggering idea is if the gun laws take away citizens guns. I was at a gathering where that was being discussed. I don’t carry a weapon or own one, but sure wish I knew enough about them to buy one. Then once you own it, you better be ready to use it. I have a great bunch of legal weaponry in my home to keep me safe so will not be purchasing a gun.
    tx for the post.

A very burning subject in Britain. If it was down to personal choice I would own a firearm for home defense. My father worked for the Royal Enfield small arms factory on the firing range. I was brought up with firearms as my father was also a member of a Gun club and he shot and won trophies at “Bisley”. Criminals will always have guns legal or illegal. A gun dosn’t kill anyone its the person who pulls the trigger!

When states have independent gun control laws, that are exempt from federal gun control laws, how can you say that Obama administration has direct influence or boosts guns sale nationwide?

Would that be a long term solution for crisis faced by US citizens or the beginning of a new crisis?

I agree with Johnny on this. I don’t want to see guns here although people are now getting shot by the gangsters. Drugs being the main suspects I think, or drug related anyway.

No matter where people stand on the gun debate the data shows that American society is the most violent society on earth. Think about that.

in our country we have to leave it in the hands of the police, a farmer shot dead an intruder that entered into his house late one night and he shot him dead, so the farmer was arrested and locked up for murder, so our laws are competely different here than over there, thanks for sharing ken.

Excellent article Ken! As for those who oppose our gun ownership rights, If you take away the law abiding citizens right to bear arms , the criminals will be the ones left with the guns to use against the rest of us. The right to protect ones self must be available to the good guys! Why should Americans only allow criminals to have guns? If we go the way of the Brits thats what will be going on here. My cousin was able to prevent a neighbor from being raped and killed because he had a gun to stop the 2 attackers that had broken into the neighbors house. It took the police almost 20 minutes to arrive. she would have been at the minimum raped, and very possibly dead if he had waited on the police rather then grabbing his gun and running over to help her.

We Americans love are guns, and I’m not one of them. I’m sorry, but the thought of an every citizen wielding such a weapon frightens me. I’m not very trustful of my fellow man. We have a tendency to loose it or snap, in the heat of the moment. There was a story of road rage where a guy got cut off. He was so enraged that he drove up along side the driver and shot the guy at point blank, right in front of the man’s young son. I don’t want to be standing in line at a grocery store and see a gun sticking out of a back pocket or a purse. That person may well be a law abiding citizen and a a good guy, but how can you be sure? How do you tell who is the good guy from the bad guys if everyone has a gun? I would not feel safer. There are many people who should never be near a gun. So many have hair-trigger tempers. If I had a gun at home, I would constantly worry it being used against me or I may accidently shoot someone I never intended to shoot. We are human after all. My God, this was awfully long. Look what you did, Ken. lol.

Great article, Ken. I don’t own a gun at this time but while in college my Dad made sure I had one and knew how to use it. Now, what was that prize the President just won, oh yes a peace prize.

Maybe Wyoming has the right idea, If everyone is armed it’s too dangerous to try to shoot anyone.
