Obama’s Free Health Care Won’t Work

Free Health Care Won’t Work.

I’ve heard many people talking about how Obama’s ideas to socialize health care will be such great thing, and I believe the people who say this have not thought the idea through. My first argument against it is lack of specialized care. Let me paint a picture in your mind. You come down with a terrible disease, lets say you come down with Lou Gehrig’s disease. Very little is known about this disease and there is no cure. The disease is basically a death sentence, BUT, there is a lab in, lets say Colorado (this part is fictionalized) that has found a new experimental treatment that has a ten percent success rate of curing your disease. Any person would say lets go for it, but if we had socialized medicine you couldn’t say that. You would have to apply to the government for approval and you could end up waiting up to seven months for an approval, if you even get it. There is also a large possibility that the government doesn’t believe the treatment is worth the money, in other words, your life costs too much! This happens all over Europe where they have socialized medicine, that is why many people from other nations come to the United States for medical treatment. That should tell you something.

My next argument is that of motivation. When every doctor will receive the same pay, why work hard? Under capitalism everyone has an opportunity to become wealthy (granted some have very little chance, but a chance all the same). I like to use this analogy and I think this explains it nicely. A teacher said he had never failed a single student, he had only failed one entire class. One of his classes one year were telling him how they thought Obama’s socialism would be a good thing. “Okay.” He said. “For every grade we will average the classes total grade and that will be everyone’s grade.” The class agreed to this. The first test the class average was a B. The students who barely studied were happy and the students who worked hard were upset. The next time there was a test the students who worked hard thought they were going to get a bad grade anyway so they stopped trying, and the students who barely studied didn’t study at all thinking the other students would carry them. The next average grade was a D, and the next test is was an F, as each student wouldn’t work hard to benefit the others. The grades continued to be F’s until the end of the class, where the entire class failed.” This shows you how when you take away motivation, no one works hard.

My next argument, granted a short one, is that the government will lose tremendous amounts of money, our money. Medicaid is a not-so-shining example of how health care run by the government will look. In New York alone, Medicaid has lost over ninety-million dollars to medicaid fraud. That’s tax-payers money! I can’t see any way that the new health care can be any different. If Medicaid is terrible then a bigger operation is going to be worse. Obama says he will be able to provide health care without raising taxes. Every analyst in the country knows that’s a bunch of nonsense. Spend billions of dollars extra and not have to raise taxes? Impossible. Overall, socialized medicine is not a good idea. The “free” doctors (we still have to pay through our taxes) will be lousy, and taxes will skyrocket. I really don’t see the upside.
