Organic tomatoes are richer in vitamin C, sugars and compounds when compared to the conventionally grown types. The research study conducted in Federal University of Ceara at Brazil revealed this fact.
The organic tomatoes researches were led by Maria Raquel, Alcantara Miranda and colleagues in the Federal University of Ceara at Brazil. The study analyzed the weight and biochemical properties of tomatoes from organic and conventional farms.
The research found out that the tomatoes from organic farms were approximately 40 percent smaller than the conventional farm grown tomatoes. They also contain more compounds linked to the stress resistance of humans.
Organic farming is the method of using natural methods of farming and exposes plants to greater stress than conventional farming. The study suggests that this increased stress may be the reason for organic tomatoes to have higher levels of sugars, vitamin C and pigment molecules like lycopene. Lycopene is an anti-oxidant which is required for human beings.
