Osama Bin Laden Was Concerned About Al-qaida Image. What Plans Had Terrorist Network Leader
Osama bin Laden wanted to change the name of al-Qaida, to emphasize the religious dimension of the organization and to protect its image, an American official said Friday.
Among the documents seized in the Pakistani city of Abbottabad villa where al Qaeda leader was killed and a letter are undated, it analyze possible names for the terrorist group in search of titles to better reflect its vision of jihad.
“It’s kind of work related to brand image,” said the U.S. official quoted.
The group originally called Al-Qaeda Al Jihad (the holy war), but is generally known only as al-Qaida, the second part of the name is ignored, which represent a concern for bin Laden.
“In his view, this meant that the religious aspect of al-Qaida mission was overlooked, which allowed the West to describe the group as an organization that is not related to a religious movement,” said the source.
Bin Laden wanted U.S. to be perceived as a power involved in a “war against Islam.”
“I found it frustrating that people see the fight against al Qaeda and what it really is – an effort to combat a violent organziaĊ£ii and not as a religious war,” the U.S. official added.
The letter was written at least two years ago, but “no one knows who was sent or if it was sent.”
Ben Laden proposed several new names for the terrorist network, including the Tawhed Taif Wal Jihad (Monotheism and Holy War group) or the Khilafat Rashida Jama’at’s I’Adat (Caliphate restoration group), said the source cited .
After disclosure of the existence of the letter on the Internet began to circulate several proposals for a new network name. Danger Room blog, which specializes in defense issues, has even proposed a contest for new name, users proposing various possible alternatives, including “extraordinary Barbosa League” or “Quesadilla”.
