Overpopulation: More Than Just Numbers
As the the human population growth rate increases each year, it is time to take a look at how our resource consumption affects the earth.
Possible Solutions
The steps needed to deal with overpopulation are easier said than done. One idea is to implement China’s one-child rule in other countries, such as the United States. However, this notion faces steep resistance, and opponents argue that this rule would lead to an increase in infanticides and may even result in government-sponsored forced sterilizations. More radical solutions involve politics, which include the abolishment of capitalist societies and the institution of socialist governments. Other proposals include dealing with the issue of overconsumption, in that instead of using brute force to decrease the population, we should change how we live in a way that puts the least harm on the planet. One of these proposals is advocated by PETA, which claims that a vegetarian diet can feed ten times the amount of people than a diet that includes meet. The use of renewable energy resources like wind and solar are also believed to greatly decrease our footprint on the planet. Whether it is addressing the number of people on Earth or the issues of overconsumption, it will not be easy to efficiently deal with these issues unless we all work together for the common good.
Overpopulation is a controversial subject that many people do not want to get into. Scientists claim that the planet does not have enough resources to support the growing populace. Solutions to this matter include methods to slow down or even reverse the population trend. However, ensuring the efficient use of resources by people is more important than focusing on the number of people that inhabit the planet. Therefore, we must all work together to ensure that future generations will be able to live and prosper the way humanity always has.
