Painting a Bus
One of the happiest days my daughter had in the past six months.
As I mentioned in one of my previous articles, Presidential and mayor elections are coming up in the end of October. Politicians race to earn our votes and compete who will make us feel better and who to bribe first. One of the candidates for mayor is a young woman dedicated to children and mothers primarily, trying to fix our problems with nurseries, kindergartens, lack of jobs for women and lack of enough parks where children can play. Ever since the campaign started this candidate and her headquarters have been organizing a number of parties and events where children and mothers can spend a great time enjoying their time together.
One of the events in September was painting a bus that later will be given to the puppet show theatre in our city. In a sunny and bright Sunday all the children of the city were invited downtown at the city square to paint the bus anyway they can. For those who weren’t carrying their own paints, the organizers literally painted their palms with various colors and the children were painting with their hands. Aside from the bus there was a large fabric put on the square tiles where children were drawing pictures with pencils, paints, pastels, markers… On the other side of the square young art students were painting funny pictures on kids’ faces or arms.
And all this was accompanied by great music, pupet show and a lot of prizes for every single child who attended this wonderful event.

My daughter was one of those whose hands were painted. They drew a colorful flower on her right palm and she ran to slap her hand on the bus. She was so excited and felt such joy that my eyes started filling with tears. Besides, I allowed her to have a butterfly painted on her face which made her even more happy.

As a mother I’m trying to do my best to provide my child with everything she needs to be healthy and to feel well. Under the circumstances of severe economic crisis and unemployment in our family this isn’t always possible. But this event made me think of how less she needs to be happy and that not everything can be measured only by money. And I came to the idea that it doesn’t really matter which party or person organizes that joy for the children. Children are that matter.
