Peace Silk, a Reduced Cruelty Way to Enjoy The World’s Most Luxurious Fabric

Are you aware that in order to create silk the usual process involves the boiling alive of many small beings? If silk is also one of your favorite fabrics and this fact concerns you, not to worry as a better way to obtain silk has been found and it is basically cruelty free.

There are those who believe silk is a cruel product, as it is made by killing silkworms after they have spun their cocoon. The cocoon is then unraveled into a single thread of silk. There are others who could care less about the “lowly” silkworm and view them as a less sentient beings.

Like many people, I love the feeling silk against my body. I own silk shirts and other silk items, but to be honest I only have a small problem with the way in which silk is usually created. That small problem has to do with the fact that silkworms are killed to create silk. Even if these creatures are less sentient than other creatures it is still a problem for me, especially when their death only results in the creation of a desired fabric. Maybe if silkworms were mammals such as cows, who produce milk, or cute seal pups, others would be more disgusted by the process of creating silk. Maybe I am purely obsessing over these small creatures because I have been told I should, after all I still drive motor vehicles and quick look at the front grill of those vehicles would attest to the death of many an insect.

Sure, silkworms are just insects and not at all like cattle or the other animals we use for food and clothing. Silkworms do not have big eyes that make you feel guilty for using their being for your own desires. I realize that silk is a desire, and not a human need, like eating. I am still going to wear silk but want a way of reducing my cruelty impact in the world when it comes to my desires. If you think like me in regards to what is perhaps the most wonderful textile on the planet then just maybe Peace Silk is the answer.

Great article. I didn’t realize that the cocoons were boiled with the silkworms in them to make silk. I like the idea of doing it more humanely. And I also love to buy clothes at thrift shops!
