Perception of Beauty
Do you think this woman is attractive?

In the past, when Burmese girls were about 5 years old, they put a brass coil one-third-inch wide around their necks. As they grew older, girls added more brass coils until they had from 19 to 25 wrapped around their necks. The appearance of long necks caused by the brass coils was perceived as being very attractive by Burmese people, who live in southeast Asia. This custom eventually declined as neck coils were no longer considered beautiful, just cruel and uncomfortable. Recently, however, the custom has been revived because now tourists come and pay $12 to see and take photos of women with brass neck coils.
This example illustrates how cultural values influence our perceptions of personal beauty.
