Politically Correct… Elementary!?

My response to reading an article about schools banning treats for special occasions.

Birthday treats doesn’t mean that they have to be cakes or cookies – or anything unhealthy. I’m all for let kids be kids but in the role of devil’s advocate – here’s how that’s handled in my child’s classroom. Teacher sent home a note at the beginning of the year stating that any/all snacks must be store bought, for safety and allergen information reasons. NO PEANUTS, NO BANANAS. If the class increases, another note comes home. There’s also no reason that snacks can’t be of a healthy manner and something that children may still enjoy such as raisins, apples, or pretzel sticks.

My child is underweight whenever school is in session and the first thing she does is come home complaining that the school meal wasn’t enough to “fill her up” and takes a dive for whatever fruit is available. It’s not just about nutrition and health/allergies, unfortunately, it’s come down to being PCE. My daughter’s school is so PC now… No halloween masks or make up. No gift giving for any reason. It’s now Spring break and winter break. No days off given for Veteran’s day, martin luther king day, columbus day… but instead they take off the first entire week of Deer Season. Whatever happened to “Room Mothers” who used to make these kinds of things happen? I suppose that they did away with those too because it offended someone, somehow..

I totally agree with your thoughts here. My kids need more to eat at lunchtime and basically there should just be someone there that can control the environment. It’s not that these issues are new, it’s the actions now taken that are disrupting everything. Michael
