Poll Shows Majority for Pro-life Movement
61% of people who responded to a CNN poll want all or most abortions to be illegal.
A large poll done by CNN between September 9 and 11th has challenged the assumption that the majority of Americans are pro-choice. The poll asked participants what their views were on whether abortion should be legal. When the question “do you think abortion should be legal under any circumstances, legal only under certain circumstances, or illegal in all circumstances” was asked, 25% of Americans wanted all abortions to be legal. 21% of Americans want all abortions to be illegal. That means that those who want all abortions to be legal had a 4% majority over those who want all abortions to be banned, putting the group of people with extreme pro-life views four points lower than the group of people with extreme pro-choice views. Predictably, the majority of people landed in the middle – believing that some abortion should be legal and some abortion should not.
Those who said that all abortion should be banned believe that abortion should be banned even in cases of rape, incest, and to save the woman’s life. The fact that 21% of the population of America has these views may seem surprising to most pro-choice Americans. There is only four percentage points of difference between the people supporting the stand of Planned Parenthood and president Obama, (that all abortion should be legal) and the pro-life believe that all life is sacred and abortion should never be performed.
But perhaps the most startling part of the poll is a response to the second question that CNN asked. When CNN post the question as to which abortion should be illegal, the majority of the group who supported some abortion said that abortion should only be legal if the woman has been raped or if the woman’s life is in danger. The actual percentage points of people who said this is 40%. 40% of the population wants most abortions banned, and 21% of the population wants all abortions banned. This leads to 61%.
The fact that this is a pro-life majority becomes clear when we look at the statistics of why abortions are performed according to the Alan Guttmacher Institute, the research arm of Planned Parenthood, and a source that definitely has no antiabortion bias. Only 2% of all abortions take place because of rape or because a woman’s health is endangered by the pregnancy. That means that the majority (62%) of people who answered the poll oppose 98% of all abortions.
The results of this poll show that a large majority of Americans are pro-life in their beliefs. These statistics may explain why so many pro-life laws have recently been passed in states across America.
Breaking down the responses of those who were against most abortions shows that women were more pro-life than men, and that younger people are slightly more pro-life than older people. Among 18 to 34-year-olds, 24% want all abortions of made illegal and 35% only want abortion to be legal in a few circumstances.
These poll numbers may give hope to the pro-life movement, showing that more and more Americans are becoming pro-life and that the position of pro-choice groups such as Planned Parenthood and pro-choice politician such as Obama are in the minority. In addition, pro-life. In addition, pro-life beliefs are very strong among young people, the new generation which is going to be more and more influential in the future. If these trends continue, we will probably see more pro-life legislation in the United States.
